Well, I started reading some Alyosha! and it's pretty funny and cute so far. I've recently read this funny little golden moment.

I just find it funny how all these problems are just coming from her friend just being such a clumsy person. Also, who tries to microwave sodas?! What would even happen if you tried doing that...? (Explode like in the panel..??)

Soda cans might spark or they might not but they should fizz up and pop from the heat if you left them inside long enough.

I like Nayuki, she's friendly and cute, even if she is an air-head.

The story does get pretty serious at times, especially toward the end, but Alyosha's child-like innocence is very endearing (and funny).  I like how helpless she is in the face of sweets.

I just read an absolutely amazing manga.

Chinami is running laps at school when she passes out.  It's an unusually hot and dry summer.  When she wakes up, she is in an old-style village where it's always rainng.  It's abandoned except for a young boy and an old man.

The story is spliced together with the memories of her mother and grandmother as a family tragedy resurfaces from the distant past along with a place that no longer exists.

Waters is the title of the manga.  It's thought-provoking, melancholy, and a bit chilling.  It's only 12 chapters and well worth reading.  I highly recommend it.

Well...Fairy Tail ended this week. I've posted a lot about it, positive and negative, though obviously I cared enough to read it to the end.

I'll post my thoughts on the final chapter, as well as some general thoughts on the manga itself, what went wrong, what Hiro did right, and overall impressions.

Chapter ends with a big party one year later after Lucy finally has her novel published. Was cute seeing everyone go wild even at a big high society event. Lots of characters returned, old gags came back. Basically your standard guild party, only out in public. Lucy mentally explains what was going on with everyone, which of course meant all the ship confirmations or implications.

While it was obvious ships would play a role, I was surprised at how little was actually confirmed. Gajeel/Levy is canon now, and it seems Levy is pregnant. Elf/Ever and Cobra/Kinana (I think that's her name, the girl that used to be his snake) seem like they're dating, while everyone else was limited to a final strong moment between the pairs. The Laxus tease was pretty hilarious; Lucy talking about rumors he was an item with Mirajane, Lisanna, or Cana, and not knowing for sure.

I'm a huge Na/Lu fan, and while I was hoping for something more solid, I can grow to accept the more open ending we got. I was little annoyed at HIro's final tease (make it look like Natsu was going to confess, only for him to take Lucy on a long quest instead), but the way their final scene was drawn spoke for itself. They'll always be each other's most important person, and nothing will ever get in the way of that. Even if it wasn't a real confession, Natsu's claim that "we'll be together forever" was about as much of a confession as I can expect from someone like him. A wedding scene like Rave Master would have been nice, but this is a different manga, and I think I'll be okay with it.

Final comment on the chapter, but Mavis and Zeref's reincarnation was really stupid. I get that it's a popular trope, and I've seen in before, but the characters died a year ago, they shouldn't be the same age now as when they died. Also the scene would have had a lot more impact if they were talking in the background, or if maybe only one person might have noticed in passing, but having the whole guild stare and them and smile and blush just made it worse, especially since no one seems to care how it happened, or what the implications might be.

LIke I mentioned, I cared enough to finish the manga, but there were a ton of parts, particularly after the Tenrou Island arc, where Hiro seemed to grow really really lazy. Nakama power became more and more overused, extreme conflicts would be set up only to be resolved the exact same way every single time. The end of the manga should have been the most climactic part, where we would be genuinely worried about what would happen, and yet it just felt like he was running on autopilot the whole time. There was never any question that Natsu would beat Acnologia with friendship power, and so there was never any tension at any point during that fight. This was a big problem with the manga as a whole honestly. Hiro hated both overly long fight scenes and training arcs...which I do too...but this poses a serious problem for someone who writes a freaking battle manga!

On the positive side, the characters always remained consistent, for better or worse, and Hiro never forgot who the main cast was. Natsu, Lucy, Gray, and Erza were always important to the story, and is a refreshing to know that every week I would be able to come back to see these characters that I'd grown to love. This was indispensible for the comedy elements of the manga, which I personally found to be a much bigger draw than the awful fight scenes. It's why I've held on multiple occasions that a rom-com or comedy SoL story by Hiro would be absolutely amazing.

He also handled emotional scenes very well, even if the setup to those scenes was often contrived. Lucy finding out about her dad's death, future Lucy dying and meeting all her friends, August finally seeing his mother, etc. Looking at these scenes in a vacuum, they were all extremely well drawn, and did a great job at bringing out emotions in me, and I've definitely cried more than once in this story. The problem though, as expected, is Hiro's inablity to leave characters dead usually dampened the blow to what could be even more strong moments, but overall, the manga did a good job at handling these scenes when they came about. I had similar thoughts on Rave Master, and while it wasn't as extreme in that case, my lasting impression on RM is these scattered strong moments, rather than the million asspulls and plot contrivances it took to get there. This will be a bit subjective, but for me, it left a more positive than negative feeling on the manga as a whole.

Overall, while some things felt anti-climactic, like many things in this manga, the ending tied up most of the loose ends, and left an overall positive feeling with the never-ending adventure theme. After the abominations that were the Naruto and Bleach endings, I feel grateful that another long-running battle manga ended without me wanting to punch the author in the face, and that I enjoyed it enough that I plan to give his next work a shot. And heh...with how prolific Hiro is as a writer, I feel confident that I haven't seen the last of the FT gang. I'm sure we'll get some cute omakes at some point, and very likely another crossover manga like he did with Rave Master. Would be nice to have a wedding omake...ku ku ku.

Anyways...that's all for now. No more Fairy Tail rants from me...probably.

You pretty much summed up my thoughts perfectly lol wow. The last arc just felt......rushed......no development where there should have been and the power of friendship overcame all......again lol. But all in all it was a decent end to a Manga I enjoyed despite some obvious flaws.

Even though I haven't read FT, it is nice to hear detailed thoughts on the series as a whole after its conclusion. It sounds kinda weird that a guy who doesn't like to draw battle scenes would end up doing battle manga, haha.

I wish I had done this with other works I've read, but with ones like Yamada and the 7 Witches, I was past done already and just wanted to move on.

Alyosha's satisfied little smile when she does the "Snip-Snip" thing is just really, really sweet.  It's like she's having her childhood now because it was taken away from her before.

I can't think of any series off-hand where I kept reading for the sake of completion.  I usually just stop reading the updates without thinking about it.  I felt like Yamada was over even if it kept going and with Fairy Tail ... I guess I just really got sick of the formula and of the main character.  And the tropes.  And the disappointing battles.  And the banana-peel victories.  But especially the formula and the main character.

It's kind of interesting but I absolutely hate many of Super Boom's favorite characters.  Like, really hate.

Haha, yeah, that is true. It's like she's finally able to be a kid, and watching her try to do it is pretty funny. That other girl with the glasses is quite the character too. Seeing her get excited about anime and shamelessly wearing that weird outfit was pretty great, though I just hit a darker turning point in the manga. The new foreign teacher just lost his thumb, which.... wow, I did not expect. Just, dang...

Also, I'm not sure why I continued reading Yamada either. It did have it's cute and funny moments I suppose. I've had this happen before with other media, which now that I think about it I should have just dropped them sooner. I guess I finish to the end so I have a full grasp of the thing I'm covering.

And that last comment just made me laugh XD

I've been thinking about reading some of the Girls And Panzer manga but I'm kind of scared.  The anime was so good.  Easily one of the best produced anime I've ever seen and the action segments of it were fantastic.  It's well above the production value you see with most manga-to-anime adaptations.  The voice acting and sound effects were also stellar (as was the music).

----

I've found a cute 4-koma titled Custom Maid!  It's about a shelted rich girl named Yuu who is secretly an otaku.  She tries very hard to keep up her image as a lady.  One day her mother brings in a personal maid for her, which makes it very hard to hide her anime watching--that is, until she discovers her new maid, Masaki, is actually the author of her favorite dojin.

Alyosha! gets quite violent and even unsettling at times.  The comedy makes you forget that it's about children being trained as assassins but then it slams you back into that world at a moment's notice.  Alyosha herself has killed over 200 people so ... yeah.  She's cute and innocent but she can also kill in cold blood without hesitation.

Imagine yourself just picking out a random manga, because it looks cute or interesting. Everything seems normal, just a slice of life story.

And then, after a few pages, you see this.

Just... what the heck..??? I have so many questions.

Ever have that happen to you? xD

It had a few strong moments, but overall just didn't have a lot of impact. Zeref and Acnologia were like the only recurring villains in the story, you'd think I'd be somewhat worried about them being an actual threat, but instead I was waiting for something that would make me chuckle now and again. Zeref's goal didn't even make sense, so I felt even less reason to care about his fight (though I did like the ending with him and Mavis).

I don't regret reading it, and even at its worst, there was still a charm to it that kept me going. If nothing else, I'd argue Hiro was definitely passionate about his work, even if he failed at long-term planning. The guy would randomly poop out two or three chapters a week sometimes, and constatly tweets artwork of his characters. Compare that to other mangaka of long-running manga, who clearly just wanted to move onto something else towards the end.

Thanks. Despite how I talk about it, Fairy Tail was one of the first manga I was really into (I started around 2011 I think), so it holds some sentimental value for me. I think that's why I was able to force my way some of the mediocrity, it was kinda...comfortable I guess, like I would always know what I'd get out of it, for better or worse.

Man...I already miss it. It feels weird thinking I won't have FT to read this weekend.

Funny...I don't think I've catted you in a while...

For the record, I don't completely disagree about Natsu. I think he's funny in comic relief scenes, and I like his relationship with Lucy, but on his own he ranges from boring to borderline retarded. I remember there was a scene in particular after the timeskip where Natsu berates Gray for leaving Juvia alone while he did timeskip stuff, only for Lucy to snap at Natsu for forgetting he did the exact same thing to her. His reaction made him look like a clueless moron, and I wish he got slapped, punched, or smashed with Luffy's Haki-enhanced fist for that.

For the rest...meh. Opinions. I could write a LAP on why I like the characters I do, but I'm feeling lazy tonight.
