Well, I gave Black Crow a shot, and... it didn't really pull me in. It does feel like a standard JUMP manga, with a character that reminds me of another big JUMP manga... which I hated. Had that annoying optimistic vibe to him, and the chapter didn't seem very interesting. I'm not sure if I should continue reading it, even for a cute girl character, haha.

Hiya manga friends...I'm back from hiatus, and finished catching up on things in here. Gonna help Pokoko and Cloud keep this thread alive with something I started recently.

A friend recommended I try The Promised Neverland (Yakusoku no Neverland). It's a recent-ish Jump manga, having replaced Bleach's old slot the week after Kubo's manga ended, so only 22 chapters deep so far. I don't like starting new manga until they seem somewhat well established...but I made an exception here.

Since it's in Jump, it must be about friendship and love and joy and beating your cool genius rival...like that manga that Poko's reading (and to be honest, I'd probably get into if I started). Well...not really, in this case. The basic premise is about a young girl living in an orphange with her foster brothers and sisters. They live a happy life with their orphanage "mother", waiting to be adopted by a family of their own. Seems nice at first...but not too far in, the plot takes a very...dark turn.

It's hard to tell what direction the story will go, but it's very unique, which I enjoy in this case. I honestly can't guess what'll happen next. Characters are fun, the plot is tense, and the art direction really really sets the mood. This is definitely something I plan to keep reading.

Past that, I'm still catching up on Tokyo Ghoul...still making myself read Fairy Tail and Seven Deadly Sins, and still loving One Piece, Shokugeki, and My Hero Academia. How's that for a summary.

That looks interesting.  I'll put it on the list.

That sounded so cynical that I laughed out loud.

As for Black Clover, if you mean the first chapter, that's really just backstory.  Nothing much starts until they join the Magic Knights and start fighting ... other Magic Knights from another kingdom.  That's pretty much every battle manga ever, though.  One guy has wind magic, another crystal magic, and so on.

There are good elements, though, and the writer does know how to tug at the heart.  The last chapter I read had a twist I wasn't expecting that was quite sad.

Black Clover is really good. Pretty sure I mentioned it here a while back, hopefully the anime adaptation is good, since there are quite a few things I want to see animated.

It does take a lot from other big Battle Mangas, like the Big 3 and even in one arc, it resembles Magi too. However, it does stand on it's own really well and does have some nice twists in it (and the last chapter was hype af). Personally, I like Aster as an MC, resembles a certain someone with how he wants to be the Sorcerer Emperor...but that's not too big of an issue for me. What I am worried about is whether it can stay consistent, but so far it's doing well and the main enemy hasn't been defeated, so hopefully it doesn't end up like Bleach....

They are finally here~

Thoughts of the week

Shokugeki: My fave girl won!!!!!!

Nice job Japan (and me too cuz it was an online poll this time)

I would prefer to eat Souma and Erina's dish, though Taku/Megu's dish looked tasty too. I like my steak though....

I hope Erina will take grandpa's advice and tell off her dad. Can't wait to see the queen return.

One Piece: Hurray!

I think Sanji had to realize how Luffy would react. He was there for both Nami and Robin's betrayals, so he should have known Luffy would pick up on a weak resolve. At least that's all settled, and we know for sure that the Strawhats will be crashing this wedding.

Just gonna quietly hope that Luffy gets to clash with a Yonkou, and that Jinbe emerges from this unscathed. *sweats*

My Hero: Oh hell naw...

Deku's had his fair share of being looked down on, hopefully he can make an impact on long-neck business man.

I liked how they're both such All Might nerds though.

Gonna stop commenting on anything else if it doesn't stand out to me, or I'm not far enough to comment on.

I'm still unsure if I will give Black Clover a few more reads, but I did pick up something else that caught my interest: Kako to Nise Tantei.

It's like Detective Conan... but with ghosts! And you have a ghost girl with a creepy face as your partner. She's pretty comical though, I think. It's very new, so there's only a few chapters. If you wanna check it out, theeen... you can.

I'm liking it more as I go along, though less for the hero than for all the other characters.  I don't hate the protagonist, he's much better than some, but I do hate the need for the hero to constantly shout out stuff that's supposed to sound cool.  It's the biggest negative of the manga for me.

I guess that's as much of a problem I have with the genre in general, though.  Some do it very well, like One Piece, where you know Luffy damn well means what he says when he gets serious, and everything is set up to give weight to his outbursts.  Others just seem like they're going for the same effect but without the substance that makes it feel meaningful.

The ghost in Kako to Nise Tantei looks nice, scary but cute at the same time.

The first three chapters were enjoyable.  The detectives deductions are the kind that bug me, though, because there really is no way to come to those conclusions based on the evidence.  I kept thinking, "I can see why he's being sued."  Kako is interesting, however.  I hope there is more depth behind her character.

Reminds me a bit of Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro ... which I just now found out had a game.  Wow.

Of course, School-girl Detective Yako had an actual demon for her "helper" so it's not quite the same.

Yeah, that is true. For a half 'detective' manga, it's sure missing the detective part. Without that, it's kind of hard to believe the 'deductions' made by the MC without seeing the investigation part, and there's also part where the ghosts reveal to him who the killer is, which kinda goes against the mystery part.

But I think Kako is interesting too, so I'll continue giving this manga a shot to learn more abot her.

I've never heard of Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro, so I'll be sure to look that up.
