Being cheaper, better and still more profitable, very good... and on scale gain and reduction of marginal cost if they start gaining market share they can improve a lot their profitability.

My Xperia Z2 would like to have a word with you. I hate that phone! It freezes all the time, loses touch capability so that you have to shut it off over a physical button combination, gets features patched out with Android updates. So no, Sony doesn't make the best phones. Samsung makes better phones, and for the record: I don't like Samsung. |
Your personal experience doesn't supercede the fact that the Xperia line is top of the line in battery life, camera quality, and near the top in processing speed, and that it's ahead of the curve with features (such as water resistance, which was a feature of the first Xperia Z but is just in the last year getting adopted by other lines of Android phone). Hell, it's near the top in crack resistance too, and if we want to get anecdotal to counter out your anecdotes my original Z has one scratch on it after almost three years, and I literally threw that thing around after a while because I was waiting for it to break so I could justify using my free upgrade lol. The only problems it has are with install base and that it can get warm sometimes depending on how intensively you use it. Though admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of how the Android 6 update cut out Stamina/Ultra Stamina mode, but at the same time the native Android battery saver seems to be doing about as well, so it is what it is.
You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt! I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading. After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

tighter alighnment with the PS4 software & services, playstation Vue, Playstation Now, remote play, share play not just PS4 games but Share play Playstation Phone games with other playstation phone gamer's. add in playstation Vita digital games support. top it off make use of the Dual Shock 3/4 support, no built in controls make it sleek like a phone but use bluetooth to provide standard game padd support for playstation 3 & playstation 4 controller's. network connected to 4GLTE etc..many directions for a smartphone designed to be the main smartphone that Sony is going to bring under the playstation fold. |

most of these loses are coming from the past with reconsrution. Sony makes more profit than MS and Samsung with its Smartphones as you can see
funny how the closed smartphone brand sells more phones and makes most of profits than all the other adroid manufacturs combined. And the story isnt uch different with consoles over open Platforms like PC |
The reasons behind Apples profits is more to do with the Apple and IPhone brand.
My brother used to work for Apple and still has many friends there. They're closed system doesn't make them much profit as much as it saves them having to pay people licensing. Their hardware makes stupid profit but Sony makes really good profit from the camera sales.
Apple mostly lose money or break even from their closed system, but they use it to build and strengthen the brand which in return brings in huge profits from phone sales, accessories and other Apple devices. The profit margins on the phones alone negate any loss.
I agree with Kowenicki thou. If Sony want to turn their mobile division profitable they must either up their sales or sell it off. I don't think a Playstation branded phone will make them much money as it will mostly only appeal to harcore Playstation fans, not your moms and dad's. Playstation fans do not buy everything Playstation like Apple fans or we would have seen better sales on all their other ranges.
Sony needs to:
1) find a better partner and improve their strategy in America for their mobile division.
2) release their apps and services on as many mobile phones to build brand awareness and increase access and profits across services.
3) offer deals across their products.
So I see the fact that some say Sony should sell off their mobile..when if again Sony instead pairs down to a PlayStation phone, why would Sony need to sell off and make their games for other platforms. When if the instead, they Don't instead of trying to sell a smartphone again quick to consumers that spend more for a upgrade just so as to upgrade for the next "big thing" instead make the PlayStation phone to be a dedicated platform like traditional game consoles are..and slows down the need to have to upgrade fast instead concentrates on making a game smartphone that developers can concentrate getting the most out of the hardware many smartphone has hardware untapped.
Many of the smartphone market is geared for the consumer to upgrade on a yearly basis it seems to have the next "greatest thing" but yet that hardware goes pretty much untapped. Year later new advertising props up to buy..buy..buy our newest smartphone.
Sony would not have to try to compete on sales numbers of the smartphone market.. Instead make chips, CMOS sensors for other smartphones as they always do and makes PlayStation network & streaming and Apps the connect as a more apps like a messenger or of the like..but taking those assets that drove xperia instead goes toward one phone designed and set to refresh when the new living room playstation releases would align with the mobile & living room Playstation be a single network aligned platform..its not about trying to compete with Samsung, Apple, Microsoft.. Its about providing Playstation gamers a option for game's on a mobile phone not designed by a company outside of playstation with a licence for playstation but a honest to goodness PlayStation smartphone
Many may say that would be not viable , well how would up to 150 million sold playstation smartphone's not be viable..when it would be about selling the software over time not so much as trying to sell you a refresh smartphone every year.
PlayStation now and network services across Android other handsets, but having 1st party make playstation phone exclusives only for playstation phone. And if its forked Android OS. Well if it works for Amazon I think it could work for Sony. Just liked it helped Apple..than there can be hope for Sony also never underestimate playstation.

Consolidation more toward , Playstation would for their electronic's are would be better off than sell off the assets for mobile when Mobile would or could be important to PlayStation's Eco system for the future. They could still support the entirety of the mobile market by still proving the CMOS sensors like they already do.
But saying that they should sell off the assets I think is or would be letting go of a good area for the PlayStation platform to expand into by making a dedicated gamers smartphone..it could still by Android Apps like other smart phones but now Software could be sold at a premium on this thus higher retail digital software sale of a game with higher ROI.

most profit per phone =/= most profit from phone sales so this doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of android sales with the likes of Samsung selling more phones in general.
