I'd sasy it was a mix of both things.

In any case, when he made that statement he also knew what software would be available, yet that didn't stop him. So he was either wrong because he did a bad job analysing what effect the lack of software would have on the sales, or he was already know that but thought that the market would still buy the console.

So he's either a terrible analyst, or he just says whatever he thinks (not what the market says).

I wouldn't say it's a mix of both things at all. If 3DS launched with the games it started getting a year later, it would have dominated at $250. The price definitely wasn't the issue. The anemic library was. The price drop was just a bandage for that.

That doesn't stop the rest of what you said from being truth, though. That being said, the PS4 launched with an anemic library as well and blew shit up regardless, so what do I really know?

I remember being around this site at the time this was going on.  The thing I can confirm is the fact that you can't really know what you say is true.  You can only speculate on it because what you're saying is NOT what happened.  Truth is no one can actually know what would have happened, especially given the fact that the time that the 3DS started gaining traction would be slightly during the price drop and another slightly at the point of MK7's release.  However, you also need to take into account the fact that the pacing up of the sales also happened during the holiday season.

There are plenty of other factors that go into sales.  No one fully understands the market.  The reason why is because the market is not going to always act the way theories suggest.

edit: Rereading what I said, it may not have been clear that I was trying to say that because Mario Kart 7 released during the holidays, the boost seen by its release was probably helped out by the fact that Nintendo hardware sees large boosts during that part of the year.  The price drop was also done in some of the slower parts of the year in terms of sales, since it's before the big holidays.

**** ***!

While I agree that it's not going to be insanely successful, I think the idea is very novel, and is basically what ms is trying to do with their steam model.
