Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Phil Spencer: It's OK If PC Gamers Don't Want An Xbox One

The higher ups at Microsoft must really be cringing when Phil says that he doesn't care if PC gamers dont want an Xbox One.

It's not how much you spend.

There is a big difference between being an option and the option.

And creating something at par with Steam is probably gonna cost a lot of money. Also to encourage support, get exclusives on the service, etc.

Anyhow, Windows Store is basically what MS should be doing. Its a market place for video, music, and games. They just need to put lots of their games on it to get people using it. They don't need ot compete with Steam, its a service that thrives on Windows.

Steam thrives on Windows because its an open platform, a fact which in terms of game software revenue doesn't benefit MS much at all hence Windows Store. If just being on Windows was enough, MS wouldn't need and or attempt either a storefront or GFWL.

That's why the phrase "PC as a Windows/MS platform" with respect to games is an empty statement.

That's why they are absolutely competing with Steam, as is every other store front on PC. They don't get free wins because they payed for(developed) the stadium(OS). <- (The crudest of analogies)

I get what you're saying, but Steam encourages people to use Windows by offering Windows content. Therefore MS is profiting one way or another.

Windows Store is vehicle for some of MS's other endeavors. Video and music distribution being the focus of that for years, now games is getting a push.

GFWL was just games and clearly pushing PC games alone doesn't appeal to MS. Instead MS started Windows Store and closed GFWL not long after.

Windows Store doesn't compete directly with Steam. They are very different in what they offer. Much of their content is mobile games and now MS exclusives.

They aren't MS exclusives, they're PC games. MS exclusive is a meaningless statement, Xbox exclusive is what matters. There is a huge difference between W10 adoption and Windows adoptions since Windows has been the dominant PC OS for decades.

CIP ROTR on Windows Store has Xbox Live integrated while Steam's version does not. MS is only benefiting from that Windows Store version. The game doesn't require Windows 10 after all, and that steam money goes to Valve and SE not MS.

And if it comes to the selling of games on PC, they are competing with all the other people who sell games on PC.

Furthermore, Steam doesn't encourage Windows use, they don't have a choice, because MS made sure that the major forces behind pc gaming such as DirectX were on their OS. Steam and in a sense most of the tech companies related to gaming are pushing toward Linux and OSX.

In a sense, as soon as WS started getting games it was competiting with Steam and Co, but now with its games like ROTR, QB, etc, its undeniably in the matchups now.

You're dragging this into conversation I don't want to have.

Okay, Steam doesn't nothing beneficial for Windows. Peace out.

Fire Tables does nothing beneficial to Android and Google :)
Compelling Software you can only get on a Pc (with Windows) does always benefit MS.
Even if it's not directly messureable or viewable and as much as some1 buy and ply games form the Windows 10 app store

Windows is different. People buy and upgrade that OS. Gaming PCs loaded with Windows, MS gets a piece of that.

Gamers have incentives upgrade their OS. Which is why people aren't using XP. Many Steam users are now using 10.
