As stated in one of my previous posts, I took a good look at the industry as a whole and at that point in time, the major innovation in that generation was the transition from 2d to 3d. This tipped the scales for SM64 for me seeing as how FF7, being a turn-based game, doesn't exactly take full advantage of the new dimension.

Also, there's just something symbolic about a franchise once so married to 2d so ably transitioning to 3d and taking full advantage of it.

Did you look at the graphs I quoted? FFVII caused that spike not Gran Turismo. Gran Turismo certainly helped, but FFVII started the spike and put PS1 on the map. After Gran  Turismo released, PS1 sales declined but it certainly helped keep PS1 sales afloat.

I certainly do not like FFVII as much as SM64 or many other games released that gen. But FFVII certiainly had the most impact.

Actually, I don't think the graph you linked is correct. FF7, according to vgchartz, released in January of 1997, not September 1997 as depicted on the graph. The sales trend doesn't change much following FF7's release in January. I think you might be giving FF7 too much credit and not enough to games like Gran Turismo which released in Japan December 1997. One should also consider releases like Tomb Raider 2, Grand Theft Auto, Parappa, and Crash 2 which are much closer to the spike than FF7 was.

Japans spike was 1997 and corresponds to FFVII releasing so early, US spike was holidays 97+98 corresponding with FFVII releasing so late in 97, and Europe had a spike in 1998 for FFVII, but had a bigger spike for 1999 due to their preference for GT.

January was only Japan. September was the US release date. Then November in Europe.

Ah, I see. Still, we don't see much the month of September after FF7's release and other very notable games released alongside it right before the spike. FF7 didn't do it alone.

Japans spike was 1997 and corresponds to FFVII releasing so early, US spike was holidays 97+98 corresponding with FFVII releasing so late in 97, and Europe had a spike in 1998 for FFVII, but had a bigger spike for 1999 due to their preference for GT.

Like I told Ka-pi, we don't see much the month of September after FF7's release and other very notable games released alongside it right before the spike. It would be foolish to attribute the spike to FF7 alone.

I am saying FFVII had the most effect. From launch of FFVII is t he biggest turning point for almost any console.

Like I am trying to be as unbiased as possible because I like Super Mario 64 more then FFVII. But from a sales standpoint its arguable Super Mario 64 didn't do much to push hardware just as you are arguing for FFVII. Mario Kart 64 released very soon after SM64 as well, even shorter time between releases then FFVII and other big games.

Thats why I said from a sales standpoint, which you seemed to take issue with. I never had a problem with your listing, I disagreed with it and gave my list as others have from their respective viewpoints.

Finally someone mentions Minecraft.

Mario is rightly seen as a big influence yet Minecraft has pretty much put early access on the map, and has become the biggest game for the next generation of kids growing up. It's even used in schools. Minecraft is played almost daily by my kids for years already. No other game can top that. Minecraft can also be seen as a poster child of the bedroom coder making it back into the game industry, the rise of indies, and the crafting/building/survival craze.

Any of these lists in 10 years will certainly include it.

I do considering SM64 sold more than FF7 but somehow FF7 wins out. I'm just trying to understand your logic.
