Well I do like how PS2 turned out when it was basically monopolizing its generation, but that probably played a part in Sony being overconfident with their vision for PS3, and I wouldn't like that to happen again. If they learned their lesson however, and we could get another "PS2" in PS5, I wouldn't mind. But thre are a lot of other factors to consider today with paid subscriptions and things of that nature, that it seems something would most likely take a turn for the worse without proper competition.

The PlayStation 2 situation, which btw is my fave console ever, had a few bad effects in the market too, but they are hard to dicern due to the PS2 mass appeal. Before I go any further, know that Im not saying it was the PS2 or Sony's fault, I'm simply pointing out the problems that resulted from It's domination in that generation regardless of whos to blame. Like anything else I claim, I have no proof that these problems were real and are based on conjecture.
The biggest problem being a lack of development effort for competing platforms which stopped them from reaching their full potential. As good as the PS2 games were, how good could the Xbox, GC and even Dreamcast games had been if their platforms were allowed to flourish? I'm not saying their games would have been better than the PS2 games, but could have been just as good in a different way. After all, back then, all consoles had their own unique hardware that would have inspired different development aproaches and opportunities. Also, all platform holders had their own philosophy and would have followed their visions when aproaching development venues with third parties.
Thing is that many people want all games only on their platform, that might be the desire behind the OP, but it is selfish and in the grand scheme of things, not a good thing.
