Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo intentionally locking content to NEW 3ds

So assuming I understood the direct I watched last night when I was suffering from severe sleep deprevation the SNES virtual console games are only playable on the NEW 3ds and not the OLD.

WHY??!?!

There are unofficial snes emulators for the ORIGINAL DS, so it is 100% not a question of power, there is no reason that these titles are locked to the NEW 3ds other than Nintendo saying "Give us your money buy a newer one."

I used to respect Nintendo as a different kind of company that didn't resort to tactics like this just in the pursuit of money, but with the recent milking of amiibo's for everything it's worth and now Nintendo's games getting season passes at launch and locking content to their new model for NO good reason.

I mean I'm not exactly that bothered that I can't get snes virtual console games on my 3ds but the changes I'm seeing in Nintendo recently just leave a sour taste in my mouth.

At least I finally got past chapter 5 of Fire Emblem Awakening without half my party being murdered.

I think it's because the Ambassador program. Nintendo gave away a decent amount of SNES titles for early 3DS adopters. They can't sell them on the 3DS because it would anger the early adpoters, but the N3DS isn't included in that deal.

Still sucks, though, I wanted to play EarthBound.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Well, finally a reason to get a NEW 3DS then.

do you really need to make a fuss about everything? At least the handheld actually gets 1st party support compared to their competition. deal with it.

Also there is no correlation with the ambassador program, since you got GBA and NES games back then, and not SNES games.

Geez is this overeaction just over super nintendo games? I'm sure you had the chance to play them already.

It's not the snes games themselves, it's Nintendo's changing attitude, ignoring what the content itself is Nintendo is l still locking it to a newer model for no reason other than to make money and it's not positive in the slightest for there consumers and fans who have already bought there system.

It's a terrible business practice and not one I would associate with Nintendo.

Actually, SNES emulation isn't possible on the old 3DS. It is possible on the new 3DS.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Barkley, Nintendo is a business. They want to sell new 3DS'. Therefore they need to give consumers a reason to upgrade. This is a good way to do it because its not holding anything from regular 3DS owners of great value.

I thought that the N3DS was the first handheld to achieve perfect SNES emulation. So I can see why they would make it N3DS only. Besides if its not people complaining about this, then its people complaining that there is no reason to get a N3DS. This gives a great reason to get a N3DS. Plus this could end up getting 3rd party support from publishers who would like to tap into a new market with their old catalog. Its a good thing.

the even funnier thing is, if nx will really be released 2016 and the rumors are right, the new 3ds will most likely be dead in 9 month.
