The only winner for VR becoming a hit is home invasion. People can break into your house entirely undetected, rob your stuff and jet all while you are locked in, visually and audibly. =)

The only thing really for MS to do is just follow suit. If VR becomes popular, MS will probably buy out another company with a VR headset or make a deal with one to get a headset as quick as possible. After that, it would be pretty easy for any 3rd party dev to port games to the xbox one.

Tell me where are these mythical companies that have VR headsets that will automagically work with the Xbox

I didn't say anything about instantly ready. If a headset was compatible hardware wise with an xbox one then it should be an easy process. There's dozens of companies playing around with VR headsets.

I think they would be best served by building their own device.

It will put Xbox in even worse shape. Which is why so many are predicting and hoping it fails.

Yes, I do tend to see this as well.  Some people are trying to convince themselves that it will fail and other are saying that it wont be popular until such a time that Microsoft is ready to release another console.  But in reality, gamers are gamers everywhere.  If you can't get that experience on Xbox this year, you aren't forced to sit around waiting for Microsoft to do something about even if I beleive that they will.

That would take too long especially if they waited til VR took off to start developement. I doubt they are working on one at the moment since they are betting on their hololens.

Considering it won't be a hit, not much more than is already happening to Xbox.

actually they might be in a quite good position regarding VR, because Sony will be locked into the PSVR 1 specs until PS5 releases, while MS could implement eye tracking and maybe make it wireless (a company claims to have a wireless chip capable of that) and have the "better VR" for 2+ years if they release that next year

with eye tracking it's possible to reduce workload by a lot as only a small part of the whole screen has to be rendered in high quality > higher res display/ higher fidelity games

I can't help feeling that Kinect would be awesome for VR tracking.

There were supposedly leaked plans before the Xbox one launched that detailed plans of using Kinect with a headset for vr.  Of course, Kinect has now been essentially killed off and the whole Xbox team had a makeover... I doubt that is still the plan.  I'm sure they probably still have some prototypes lying about, probably wouldn't be too hard accelerating something to production if it proves to be a weakness...

however, I'm sure Microsoft will just be content to push holo lens for the Xbox one and just wait for the next cycle to release vr.  In the very small chance your hypothetical is correct.  Personally, I think vr is going to be just like 3D tvs.  Widely talked about for a few years, but never really catching on.

I'm gonna have to find some nice eating crow memes and gifs (if any) for later on.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't realistically see a $400+ peripheral on top of a $300 console purchase being a hit at launch.
