As some one that owns the game and followed up until launch, I'll chime it. The first is that I see a few things in the thread being stated that aren't true.
1. Sony had nothing to do with the rushed release. Capcom built the Capcom Pro Tour around SFV. The first CPT tournament is on February 26th.
2. There isn't going to be a Super/Ultra Street Fighter V. Street Fighter V is built around expansion via downloadable content.
3. Sony has provided tournament pot bonuses for the Capcom Pro Tour. They ponied up 500k last year and another 500k for this years tour. The game isn't going to be on anything other than PS4 and PC for the foreseeable future.
Now what I've gotten that out of the way, lets get to the game itself. In it's present state SFV is basically for hardcore fans only. It's barebones and missing features. Am I enjoying the game? Yes. They've nailed the gameplay and netcode. Matches are fun and I've only had 2 out of about 100 matches with lag issues. That said, I think Capcom made serious error in focus.
Capcom is going for the E-Sports model. I don't have a problem with that in and of itself. That stated, casual gamers are what make your game a hit. The lack of single player content is turning off a lot consumers and they may not come back to the game in June for the free cinematic story expansion. I think Capcom in their rush to get the game ready for the tournament scene, underestimated the importance of single player content.
I'll use myself as an example. I bought MKX. I have never played it on line. Okay, part of the reason is because I know how abysmal the net code is, but when it come to Mortal Kombat. I'm a casual player. If MK didn't have a variety of single player content, I would have been buying the games.
I'm hardcore SF fan, so I can enjoy the barebones content while awaiting all of free gameplay updates. Most people aren't like that. Most gamers, once they get a first impression on title, don't change their minds. Even after all the updates come to SFV throughout the year, the initial review scores aren't going to change. A lot of the potential audience are going look at the reviews, a decide to buy something else. It's a shame, because from a gameplay standpoint SFV is excellent..
I hope they turn things around. I like the game and unlike Street Fighter x Tekken. All of the characters are earnable without paying any real money. All of the upcoming game modes and yearly balance changes are free. After paying $130 for SFIV on the 360. ($60 for SFIV, $40 for SSFIV, $15 for AE, and $15 for Ultra), the new model is great for someone like me, because I'll play enough to not spend a time. I have 300,000 fight money already.
