So what's he going to do with all the other Zelda games?

Doubt he'll be able to do much - eventually she'll grow up and realize what are facts. Of course, at that point she can go two ways, either thinking it was sweet, but wrong to change them, or she'll think "so you can change facts to fit your own whims - well that's nice, where do I sign up?".

Link is literally the definition of a blank slate character though, and the LttP model can easily befit either a boy or girl. Those two things together led directly to the hack in question. If she were playing Duke Nukem or any other game with a definitively, unchangeable gender for its main character I'm fairly certain he wouldn't make this change.

Yeah, that is true that link is pretty much a blank state, but I don't mean just Link though. I just mean all games in general. I don't see what's wrong with playing with a character of an opposite gender. Also, I suppose Link's sprite kinda does look like a girl, but I think the sprite could have been changed to look more so like it.

I know you meant every game but my point is that this particular guy changed this particular game for this particular reason. I'm sure he understands that this is a rare scenario where he can get away scot-free with changing gender this easily, and it sounds like he's just trying to help his daughter cultivate a similar experience and love of games with this small change.

It's no commentary of gender equality in games here, it's just a guy who wants his daughter to start with this one game with the one change to a gender neutral character so she has the best chance of getting hooked.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

Are all romhacks going to get special news treatment now, or just the ones that make SJWs all tingly inside?

Wouldn't it be better if people could identify with characters regardless of their gender?

Why do you all care so much. It sounds like this quy's personal project. Why do you give a fuck about his personal project?

I don't exactly see the point and it seems like his kid doesn't exactly care or realize any of this anyway (the text makes it seem his child hasn't even played or wanted to play the game, "just in case"), but sure if he wants to do this go ahead. It's not like modding isn't a thing in a million other games either. In that sense I agree this is in no way newsworthy because it's just a mod, nothing more.

In the real world, by the way, Link's male.

Dude, seriously?

In the real world Link is a fictional character, whose gender can be changed when the creators damn well please.

OT: The reactions in this thread disappoint me. It's the guy's daughter, who probably likes girly things and maybe won't like to play as a male character. Kids prefer characters that are more like them. He's being a great dad, and it's not a waste of his time.

You know what I meant.

And sure the creators can, but they won't, and therefore there isn't a debate. Plus this man isn't the creator and I already said I don't care how anyone mods any of their games. Power to him.

This 'news' is just out there to get this pointless discussion up again.

Yeah, that is true. Despite the extra work it had to take, it is a nice effort on his part.

You guys are overreacting. He just did a little hack for his daughter that he thought would be fun. It's not a waste of time or ridiculous if it's something he wanted to do. Nobody's forcing anyone to play it and no one's changing anything major in an actual game.

The game is supposed to be about LINK, not the player that's playing him. Also, tumblrfags are totally gonna eat this shit up. Gg.

It's an interesting move for sure, but it should be taken as no more than a personal choice. Nobody should really be offended since it doesn't affect you personally.
If you want my opinion, I'm with Pokoko and Ka-Pi in that the decision to make Link male in the game was the decision of the creator, and thus there is nothing wrong with experiencing the work of fiction for what it is. Besides, a lot of "male" protagonists and characters in Japanese media are androgynous and may be biologically male but dress or look on the more feminine side (yo Tidus, women cosplay you the best just sayin'). Thus, someone whom is transsexual may see heroes like that dressing or appearing feminine and identify with them in that regard.
For any other reason there are RPGs. You can do whatever the hell you want with your character in RPGs.
