Forums - Politics Discussion - Do people fear you because of your skin color?

I've gone to the grocery store to buy..... whatever and to get to it I'd have to walk past some random kid of a different race. That kid lost his damned mind, crying. I just grabbed the item of the shelf, totally ignored the kid, and went on like nothing happened. The kid looked dumbstruck. Stopped crying and looked at me like "You better get back here and kill me! I wasted good tears on you!"

Well, no. I'm white, and haven't been anywhere where that would make people feel uneasy.
But in Japan, I definitely got treated differently some times. Though usually it was assumptions that I didn't know any Japanese, and probably because I'm a foreigner and not my skin color per say.

Did the Japanese treat you really well? It seems usually among foreigners, white people are probably treated the best, especially blonde blue eye, haha. I had a friend who fit that description and he told us stories on how Japanese were so kind to him. They'd openly speak to him, compliment him, and took him out to eat several times. That guy sure was lucky.

Because of skin color? I don't think so, I'm a just a regular white guy. But people do stare at me sometimes, maybe it's because I have green eyes? Or my face is just too ugly, who knows? xD

Oh, and for some reason people tend to think I'm american too. There was a day where I went to a mall and a lady started speaking to me in english on the elevator, because I was wearing a Salt Lake City t-shirt. And when I went to Orlando, every brazilian I met there said the same thing: "You don't look Brazilian at all". It was really awkward.

I'm white and have a lot of asian friends. When we were young, if I was at their house and we were having dinner, their parents would have me try a bunch of weird food that I didnt like, and they'd laugh and point (srsly, it was so obvious :'c ) and talk shit about me in Chinese. Lol

Asian parents are evil. Its all good though

So obviously it is a problem. But what is the cause. Some will say that we fear people who look different but most fear is learned. Reading some of your responses makes me sad because I have seen it first hand and have seen how it can trigger self loathing. On the opposite side of that a lot of you seem to be taking it well. And you have helped educate folks so thats great.

I have been told that I look like "the kind of guy who would bury an ax in somebody." before and my wife told me that she had reservations about dating me because she thought I looked like a serial killer. And I guess since statistically white males are the most dominant race in the serial killer field... maybe?

Oh... oh my goodness! Thats harsh lol. Did you ever ask her why she thought that?  I have been told that i look like the type of guy people want to have sex with.

Thankfully no since in my country we're all different colors so we don't discriminate between ourselves. Though in college I do feel like people are scared of me before I talk to them. But I think that's more about my serious expression and not the color of my skin.

Something to do with the way my eyes look in pictures.  Also, when we were watching the initial seasons of Dexter she kept mentioning what she thought were striking similarities in my personaility and the character's.
