Forums - Politics Discussion - Do people fear you because of your skin color?

Yeah, for being white. Dunno if it was fear or what. But last Summer I was in Texas and my grandfather took me to this Mexican flea market place where people sold random items -basically a huge garage sale. Anyway, since my grandfather is from Mexico he was going to be my translator there since no one there spoke English and they had some nice items for pretty cheap. But whenever I passed by people they gave me weird looks, like 'you shouldn't be here' and some hid their stuff. The problem is that unlike my grandfather I'm really white with blonde hair and blue eyes so they may have felt something was off. Especially since out of the hundreds of people there, I was the only white person. Everyone else was Hispanic x~x well, I'm technically Hispanic myself but most wouldn't know by looking at me XD

Yes people often fear me. I do have purple and yellow striped skin though.

Nah, everybody loves me. I'm black and have dreads. It's all about how you present yourself. I don't look even remotely scary, and that's on purpose.

Truth, right there!

People do make assumptions based on stereotypes. But you can also squash them in a minute.

When I just came to the U.S. I thought it would be extremely segregated, to the point where I wasn't going to be able to form a meaningful relationship with someone of a different race, but it was nothing like that. In fact, it was the opposite.I have never ben treated differently, nor have I been "labeled" during the now seven years that I have lived here, although most of that time I've resided in "Racist Texas."I would say it has more to do with how outgoing you are.I am an introvert at heart, and when I was in school back at my home country, I'd often get these looks of uncertainty by my classmates, and teachers, even though we shared race and nationality. When I was learning English, I tried to be friendlier, so that people wouldn't treat me differently since I lacked mastery of the language.Eventually, I learned how to be an extrovert, and I realized that the reason that I got those looks was because people didn't know how to approach me considering they had never seen me in extended social interactions.

Like I said, I have always been treated fairly and kindly by everyone despite being open about my immigration status at the time.(in high school I even used to joke about being deported when I was called into office LOL...)

So my advice to you, try to be a little more friendly and open to people and you'll see what difference it makes, not only in social situation but in business related too :)

I don't think people are afraid of your skin colour but the way you dress.

People definitely fear me, idk if it's my skin color or what. Usually when I'm walking they'd cross the street to avoid me, If they have a kid with them they'd tell them not to talk to me. Females clench their purses while males check their wallets. People look back and double take because they can't even believe I exist. When I walk into a small store or restaurant the whole place becomes worried and uneasy because they think I'm going to rob the joint. People have said I look intimidating, what did I do to deserve this? Stop judging me without knowing me.

Well, no wonder, you are a freaking Dinoaur!

Ugh, darnit BraLod! Beat me to the punch again..! >.<

I'm like the opposite. People seem to like me and have an easy time talking to me. When I used to do Japanese conversation, I'd be paired up with new people often to help them feel welcome, haha. Maybe it's cuz I'm just smiling all the time.

Yes, I get that a lot. Idk why white people are like that though (some not all obviously). In high school people would talk to me and be like, "I was afraid to say something to you because you look intimidating" (which obviously they got some courage to actually say something to me xD) . I've even had random people want to fight me because of this as well.

People afraid of me because i'm white, have long black hair, black beard + heavy metal t-shirt.

I have an arabic look and im muslced and bearded. Girls honestly like me. But man feel intimidated. Long before i got muscled. But u know what can i do. I live my life. And im happy. Lol it makes it even more obvious cause i married an arab. This is a great topic i rather discuss over voice.
