Forums - General Discussion - ? concerning transgender people

Are you transgender(or any other special gender)?

Yes. 7 6.36%

No. 103 93.64%

Just curious, but why do people feel as if their biological gender does not describe their actual "gender"? is there any science that can explain the mindset behind a transgender person?

I'd rather not assume and potentially become a douche to everyone...so I'll play it safe and not jump to any conclusions.

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

You should add a idk part to the poll.

Depends on what you consider "science". Science as in, making things exploding, won't give you any meaningful result.

Jokes aside, there's never a fullfilling explanation as for why some people feel they are in a wrong body. Considering the diversity of the transgender landscape in our days, you just can't point at a single, unitary explanation. It is believed that biological reasons, such as genetic factors or prenatal hormones, combined with early childhood experiences and those in the adolescense contribute to the development of a different gender mindset from the body they were born with. Transgender people experience their identity in very different ways and in different ages; some may have feelings and explore gender-nonconforming attitudes at a very early stages of their lives.

A friend of mine older brother is trans (female to male). He said he realized(felt) he was boy since he was 5 years old and never in his life remembers feeling like a girl. Some people come to that realization very early, some later. The brain is so complex i'd imagine the reasoning is different depending on the individual.

Brain doesn't matter.Popping pills won't change the thing that matters most....
Men are born with a Y chromosome, women with another X chromosome. This is what determines gender.
XX = female, XY = male.

Brain does matter, though. The psyche is a very complex system, and deep inside each one you can see the different motives, reasons, ideas or philosophies that make someone being in conflict with the gender he or she was born with.

That is what determines someone's biological sex not their gender/gender identity which is one of the personal issues many trans people face. A trans person feels detached from their biolgical sex and their gender, so yes the brain does matter and plays an important role in a trans person's psyche and gender identification.

There have been some brain studies done on this topic, and they actually found that the structure of the brains of "Transgender" people more closely aligns with their chosen gender than their genetic gender.

For instance, one study, in Spain, had 18 FTM transgendered men, 24 "cisgendered" men, and 19 "cisgendered" women. First, they compared the "cisgendered" men and women, and found that the arrangement of white matter in the male brains were different from the female brains. When they then looked at the FTM guys' brains, they found that the white matter matched the other male brains, despite them being genetically female. Note that these were FTM men who had not yet had any treatments.

A similar study by the same group focused on MTF transgendered women. They found the transgendered women typically had white matter patterns roughly half way between the regular male and female structures. If I were to speculate on a possible reason why the FTM men had male brains while the MTF women had brains half way between... I'd guess it's probably something to do with the influence of testosterone.

I have no sources, but I've read it multiple times - Basically, we know that your chromosomes shape you in two "steps", one for the body (as in, genitals and stuff) and one for the brain. The theory is that something happens there and instead of turning the body male and the brain male, body becomes male and brain becomes female.
It is possible to see, in the brain, a part that tells you how your body "should" look like (for example, 2 arms, 2 legs, dick and no breasts. So your brain understands what you are and how you function). This part, for some reason (possibly the previous stated theory) does not match with the body.

Being transgender is a very real thing. I kinda suspect that there are (tumblr)people who claim to be trans without actually being it, and thats a shame.

I read a study where scientists had found a way to identify trans people at the age of 5 with 90% + certainty. However, early study and it might be coincidenses and whatnot, but still. And none of these things are determined through asking about a person's feelings, its brainscans and stuff.

If you're born with an extra leg or something, you'd most likely want that removed to make your body "normal" again. Being born transgender is similar, and physical treatment helps the same way.

Looks like I was sniped :o haha. I took so long to write my reply. You had sources though, good job :)
