Forums - Gaming Discussion - So, Let's Talk About CGI And Game Development

I'm afraid I have no knowledge to offer, but I find this topic absolutely fascinating.

Don't take this personally, but the second picture doesn't look more realistic than the first one. There is more hair, but look like fiber from a brush instead of hair. The hair here doesn't grows spiral like a normal hair would do when grows too much. Its a techinical accomplishment, this is certain, but without artists capable of using it in a productive and efficient way, will not means much.

There is a lot of problems to overcome yet that can't be seen pictures too. Example: muscle that are only visible when you are in a certain position (think the omeplate). Models used today consist only in the "skin" and in the "bone" in varrious cases. This is why cartoony visuals looks so natural. The moment when eyes rolls, you see that something is off. Mouths too, when people in CG talk, i feel like there is something of in their mouth, can't tell exactaly what.

If the thing that you are talking about will not solve theses problems, i doubt that will really blow my mind.

"Hardware design isn’t about making the most powerful thing you can.
Today most hardware design is left to other companies, but when you make hardware without taking into account the needs of the eventual software developers, you end up with bloated hardware full of pointless excess. From the outset one must consider design from both a hardware and software perspective."

Nothing to add to the topic. But now I'm offecially hyped to see your project. I'll be looking forward to a commecrial rveal... Not tech talk

" every video game character you see, whether in a pre-rendered cutscene or real-time gameplay, is CGI. They are made on the exact same programs."

That is interesting, indeed.

Yes. Their addition to a game is different (as in, the process), but an in-game model and a cinematic model are still made of the same material. I used to confuse this, too, but these days, when I see someone say, "oh that's just CGI, not in-game", I must correct them!

The way I imagined it. CGI models are created using super high-end computers and very advanced tools in an isolation of the game development environment. But in-game model creation is something that happens within the engine of the game ( if that makes sense) using tools that are scaled to fit the target console limitation.

All the models are created on an outside program, generally Zbrush and then moved into a supporting computer program like Maya. From there, they are imported to a game engine (be it something Unreal or proprietary). That's why that Naughty Dog video is so important to watch! :P

Tooooooo long of a video for someone like me. If I ever used such info it would be for arguing proposes... which I almost don't do anymore xD. I'm only cursor to know the very first basics, nothing more.
Anyways, regarding the quality of your project. I say "Pics or it didn't happen"

I don't have much to say about the topic, but I'll use the chance to post my favourite (for some years now) CGI character design:

Cold Blue

If I were you, I'd pose that man into erotic positions and masturbate to it.

I've enjoyed following your game updates on social media through the years, and you've gotten a lot better at it! I do always appreciate the great work that goes into beautiful modeling, I know people criticize games that have great effort into it, but it's hard to not appreciate when some games do it so well.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

That is some kickass CGI-Quality right there in the front page.

The lack of The Order 1886, is a bit troubling though.

Well, yes, they're both CGI. But we've made a distinction long ago about both. Using CGI to talk about pre-rendered imagery.

But everything on screen is computer generated. Even Super Mario Bros 1 is CGI when we use your way of describing things: Computer Generated Imagery.
