What about them?

That's not anywhere close to last gen.

You want a smart phone as strong as the PS4? give it 20-30 years and MAYBE... you ll see it then.

Woah, not a chance. 10 years MAX. I'd be very surprised if Mobile Devices aren't as powerful as a ps4 within 5 years.

In 5 - 10 years? Maybe... although the annual progress of mobile GPU power is slowing down every year: the iPhone 4S / iPad 2 were ~600% faster than their one year older predecessors, now we are down to ~100% per year and the annual gains will probably fall to 30% - 50% in the following years.

2017 like ARM suggest? Never.

The only games so far which perform better on (high end) mobile devices than on PS3 or 360 are the Telltale games (The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us, Game of Thrones...) due to the shitty / RAM hungry Telltale-Engine, which brings PS3/360 to their memory limits.

The Nvidia Shield X1 uses around 10-15watts of power (its a tablet chip, used in a mini console)

That means its roughly 1/4th the power of a Playstation 4.
And at 10-15watts, which would be too much for a smart phone (usually 3watts or lower).

Actually the Shield TV uses almost 20 watts when a demanding game runs:

A smartphone or tablet with that chip would need additional power for the display.

Thank you for posting this.

Nvidia loves to claim their mobile chips (which are usually way to power hungry for mobile) are able to compete with this and that in terms of graphics.

Best mobile chip on the market right now, is 1/4th of the PS4 (or less in performance), and uses 19.4watts doing so.

If they tried to scale that up to PS4 levels, they would probably design a chip just as power hungry as the PS4.

Theres just no way that in 2017, we see Smart Phones equal to PS4s.

This over the top marketing has to stop, and people need to stop swallowing this crap.

Look how many in this thread, actually think before 10years we ll see smart phones as powerfull?

How does marketing fool so many people?

There is clustering inside their new SOC's, and its just not hyperthreaded. Or virtual cores these are full processing cores.

Already in Samsung galaxy7 it contains a GPU that full supports Vulkan full Api!

https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/820

That is the main thing .also take a look at the Ram access speed, and smartphones this year are going to already ship with 8GB of ram!

If you go with A80 single board computing boards pico-itx design boards they are already past the xbox360 & PS3 and the cost is quite a bit cheaper. $72.00 boards brand new.

There is no doubt what Arm holdings is saying is Quite true.

This is not just about smart phones or tablets only, when Arm holdings are talking about these smartphone chips. ExampleExample

Those single board pico-itx size SOC's are already able to pass the xbox360 & PS3..the system boards already have SOC's clustering..

The point is they can ship these boards with 8GB ram now even in a smartphone or tablet. Their scaling is 14nm scale ,& supports Graphics Api like vulkan & DirectX 12 not a cut down over but the exact same APi going into PC & game consoles. The galaxy s7 has freaking water cooling! In smart phones now.

You also have to remember , that the game engines, and development tools & development experience with Mobile chips now is not like dealing with the chips back 10 years ago. John carmack took care to point this fact out. He pointed out that today's smartphone SOC's take just as much development resources & experience with the new chipsets, because they are more advanced that share a lot in common with their bigger counterparts akin to the PC.

These chips are not like smart chips of the 90's and 2000's these are quite a bit more advance, like a rather large gap in advance over previous smartphone chips. The advancement growth was way higher than many in here do not see to think it has.

Yes there is.  When they say stupid crap like Smartphones more powerfull than a PS4. Quite true my arse.

The best "mobile chip" so far is probably Nvidias Shield Tv X1.

But thats not a smart phone chip (its a tablet chip for a mini console), and its barely better (if it actually is) than a Playstation 3.

It uses waaaay more than 3watts of power (19watts in the picture above).

Getting Vulkan API is great for smart phones, so is faster ram access speeds, or memorybandwdith going up.

But you wont see a mobile phone with 176 GB/s Memory bandwidth or 1,84+ Teraflops of compute power.

That while is a awesome system is or has no way near the most powerful or best mobile SOC.not even close.

As for that A80 chips not in smart phones? It is indeed already in tablets & smartphone's

"Mobile devices will be more powerful than PlayStation 4, Xbox One in 2017, ARM forecasts"

"Devices like the Nvidia Shield could look as good as the current generation of consoles in the near future." (tablet in the picture)

"That supercomputer in your pocket will soon make Sony’s and Microsoft’s latest home gaming consoles look old and crusty."

"ARM, the technology design company responsible for the chip architecture in mobile devices, is preparing for another big leap in computational power for smartphones and tablets."

"At the Casual Connect conference in Amsterdam this week, ARM ecosystem director Nizar Romdan explained that the chips that his company creates with partners like Nvidia, Samsung, and Texas Instruments will generate visuals on par with and then surpass what you get from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles by the end of 2017. That means we are about a year away from having smartphone and tablets that are capable of running the same games (at least graphically) that we previously bought dedicated gaming hardware for."

All quotes from that bad VentureBeat article.
