Forums - General Discussion - UN Challenging Japan’s Treatment of Women, Suggests Ban of Erotic Japanese Games

Out of curiousity, I decided to see how bad women in Japan have it.

Longest Female Life Expectancy in the world, with men living 7 years less on average... Guaranteed Gender Equality under their Constitution... A lack of female politicians, but they are better represented on a national than local level... the wage gap is real, but seems connected to how part-time jobs are overwhelmingly filled by women... Divorce is available... a majority of women are college graduates... Abortions are restricted but allowed... There's been an epidemic of stalkers, but that occured once "nasty emails" were categorized as stalking... Workplace Harassment is a real problem... Domestic Abuse has historically been hard to measure...

From the looks of it, Japan seems to be roughly average or upper-middle in terms of womens' rights. Well Behind Scandanavia and whatnot, but still ahead of many countries in the Americas, Asia, and Africa.

Love and tolerate.

How about they deal with actual fucking oppression in the ME/elsewhere?

My first thought too. Such a cop out, going for easy targets like this. I find these games tacky and tasteless but banning them when there's actual repression and horrible abuses of women in cultures around the world makes the UN look petty, irrelevant, and ridiculous.

It is a cop-out yes, but I don't think a lot of people realize how utterly difficult it is to combat such horrid practices. This is because these practices have become so culturally engrained that complete removal is not an option. The best method of attack is education, which thankfully has been happening - but much work still needs to be done.

So I guess what I am saying is that the UN is really working on many of these issues, such as a campaign against female genital mutilation practices in Africa. But they can't hope to stop it completely - only stanch the flow a little.

In fact, 8 days ago (February 6th) was the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. That day probably came and passed for a lot of people because they weren't aware of it. The only reason a lot of you are aware of this specific "feminist issue" is because it was brought to your attention - as a threat. But why is this? Because now it concerns you. Am I calling all of you hypocrites? Maybe. But that isn't the right thing to do, and I apologize if I offended anyone, because we are all in this together. In fact, I'm glad you are all concerned with female issues worldwide, and I'll provide this link as further reading material about Feb 6th  http://www.un.org/en/events/femalegenitalmutilationday/

Now I'll stop talking about that and vent a little.

As a feminist, one of the biggest things that pisses me off are the existences of people like Anita Sarkeisan or Brianna Wu who have absolutely no place as prominent figures. (Although, Wu did get rekt recently, thank God. Doubt she'll be back). They're scam artists whose background is either embellished or complete fiction. They make a mockery of a legitimate movement by screaming about gender "issues" they personally see and damn right they get fucked up for it. Anyone who lies for personal gain should get fucked up. And in this case? When there are critical issues that women face worldwide? They are making a blatant mockery, and now millions hate feminism because they see the movement as the product of what Sarkeisan and Wu represented. I wish it was a criminal offense to misrepresent feminism like that.

So many potential feminists, even here in this thread, who don't want to associate themselves with the movement because dingleberries like Sarkeisan and Wu made a mockery out of it. It really makes me sad.

So please, if all of you would read the link and realize that we are really trying to end these issues worldwide, that would be great! Don't hate the UN because it wants to investigate your rape games. We're all in this together.

Thanks for reading.

Furthermore, I might as well copy/paste the whole release from the UN so people can read about the whole thing. Thanks.

While I agree that there are more pressing concerns , that doesn't mean that other issues whether right or wrong can't have there own agenda.

I'm sure the UN has hundreds of commitees covering a wide range of subjects,  and out of these come reports , some useless, some biased others trivial ,along  side these are some important reports and for all it's many faults, it has a legacy of  humanitarian and social reform that's not to shabby , after all where talking about a large group of nations with disparate and quite often opposing viewpoints, controlled at the top by a veto wielding elite.

The fact is these PC brain fades make for better headlines than something like, the annual report into the alleviation of curable blindness in 3rd world countries or some such document.

Research shows Video games  help make you smarter, so why am I an idiot

This is just stupid. Is UN gonna try and ban all the pornographic content that shows violence against woman's too? You know, pornographic content that is made in the West and for which female pornographic actress get paid ....

My left hand won't be happy with this........

Pocky Lover Boy!

If there was a game about little caucasian children being blown up with grenades at the top of the statue of liberty you wouldn't be so chill about it. It wouldn't be just fiction or pointless. We're talking about a game about rape, where's the fun in that, what's so great about raping? Just saying.

I don't think anybody is defending those type of games, more of the fact that the UN is targeting stuff that is minor compared to things that countries like Saudi Arabia do to women (women that actually exist mind you).
