Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Let's face it: The 3DS needs to die ASAP

Honestly, I think the 3DS has perfect graphics for the types of games that it mostly plays. The system is filled with great niche JRPGs partly because the low-res screen allows for such short development times. It doesn't take much effort for a developer to push the boundaries of the 3DS, but it will likely take a lot of effort to push the boundaries of Nintendo's next handheld. I cringe to think how many fewer low and even medium budget games we're going to see on Nintendo's next handheld if it has development timelines anywhere near that of the Wii U. You can definitely say goodbye to yearly Etrian Odyssey releases.

I agree so much.

why you have to put the Vita into it?

Because Playstation Vita perfectly illustrates how insignificant complex visuals are to handheld consumers and video game developers.

The OP claims that the 3DS "needs to die ASAP" because of its limited hardware, while the Vita suggests otherwise.

I'm just pissed that he didn't clarify that it's his opinion

I do agree that the 3DS should be replaced, but your reasons are silly. I can clearly see what's happening on screen, everything looks how it should for the most part, and I can appreciate the many great artstyles and all their details. Of course everything would look better if it the 3DS was more powerful, but as it is be decent enough. Games, or rather the lack of, should be the main reason it dies, that and Nintendo being unable to support two different systems of course.

The 3DS is a nice system. It has  some nice games, but I don't own one. Why, you ask? Because I won't buy this hardware with 240p screens in 2016. It's just not acceptable. Many games look terrible on the system. Have you seen Hyrule Warriors Legends? It's ugly. And its power is the next problem. I don't know concrete specs, but really? We have the year 2016! You can't sell this piece of hardware in 2016. It's painful for Nintendo. Nintendo needs to move on. We would all profit from that. With a more powerful hardware and better screen resolution we would have a better gaming experience. Games like Hyrule Warriors Legends or Xenoblade 3D could look much better. Indie Devs could port there games more easily to the hardware. Western AAA Devs may get interest back in Nintendo's handhelds.

What do you think? IMO Nintendo NEEDS to replace this console with hardware from the last decade this year. We NEED a new portable device from Nintendo.

And have you ever used the YouTube App of the 3DS? It's terrible with the 3DS's screen resolution.

So let's see. We have a system that is still selling somewhat well after 5 years. It is still getting some really good games. The hardware and software is still making money for Nintendo and you propose that Nintendo kill it for the simple fact that the hardware is outdated? Boy, I hope you never become a business executive who has to make decisions like this. Whatever company you'd be working for would be screwed.

First of all, western developers aren't avoiding the 3DS because of the specs. After all, many of them are still very much willing to release mobile games that are compatible with low-end android devices. They abandoned dedicated handheld systems because they don't see it as a good investment for them. Western developers have never taken handhelds seriosuly. Even going back to the original Game Boy, it was almost always the Japanese developers who made original games while most western developers released downgraded ports of console games. So given that they never took the handhedl market that seriously to begin with, why would they invest in it now when developing for mobile devices is a much chear and more profitable alternative?

Second of all, you don't just kill a game system for no good reason. That's a good way to lose your customers. That's what Sega did. The Genesis was doing so well in the US market, even after the Sega Saturn was released. Despite being told by Sega of America it had at least another good year left, Sega of Japan killed it simply because the Saturn was out, Saturn sales sucked and they wanted people to buy the Saturn. So they attempted this by murdering the one cash cow they had left. Then fans felt betrayed (for many other reasons as well) and they didn't go to Sega's next console. So yeah, killing a system that people are still buying is a good way to turn into Sega.

So in the end, there is no reason for the 3DS to die. None. You might not like the hardware but most people don't care. In fact, in tis gaming environment where retro gaming has become huge business, people care even less about hardware specs than they used to. If these people are willing to play NES games on a 50" TV, then having an outdated resolution on a handheld screen isn't going to hurt them.

They can still likely offer those smaller, niche games as digital only releases for $20-30. Just because the hardware is more powerful doesn't necessarily mean budgets have to increase a ton.

So you are saying that they would have to charge less for said games, even though development costs would stay the same or maybe even increase since they would have to develop for a higher resolution?

still plenty of games on my list to get: majoras mask 3d, tri force heroes, the new fire emblem, bravely default, pokemon Z/XY2, xenoblade chronicles 3D.
And I really enjoyed the ones i already got.

Also, resolution is overrated. I dont expect more than 540p on next nintendo handheld. And it would be enough.

It can die or they can continue to put as many games on it as possible.

Nintendo shouldn't, however, push an expensive half-assed upgrade in the form of the N3DS. So so stupid.

Digital has a higher profit margin than physical so a game that typically retails for $30-40 could be $20-30 as a digital only title and make the same if not more per unit sold plus the higher chance of increased sales due to a lower price.

Totally unbiased opinion you got there.

We truly live in a strange world these days, where opinions are criticized for being biased.

OT: If you want to play Hyrule Warriors with better graphics on a small screen you can always buy the Wii U version.

In fact, if you care this much about graphics you shouldn't buy handhelds in the first place. And Youtube capabilities were perfectly implemented on cell phones years ago; a portable device that I presume you already own.

Technically, the way it is stated makes it seem like it's an unquestionable fact.
