Forums - Sony Discussion - I don't like Uncharted Nathan Drake Collection so far...

Exploration is great, but it's not neccesary.  I wouldn't push it in Uncharted just because.  If Naughty Dog pushes more for exploration, that's great.  If they don't, it's still great.  As long as the game is enjoyable, that's all that really matters to me.

I don't know if Nathan is neccesarily an explorer.  Even if you argue he is, that doesn't neccesarily mean that's what people play the game for.

Nathan is an explorer by virtue of the fact that he's a historian/thief and was raised by a thief. He's been involved in high profie heists that prepare him for the next casing/ theft. He's motivated to discover historical elements because of his lineage which to some degree seems to be a mystery. If anyone wants to know the history of an item and wants to know how to steal it because ancient traps and things they go to Nathan.

The new lara croft is not a thief, but she was a rich girl taught by her father how to be a survivalist at a young age and somehow this taps into her being an explorer. Badly written, but great acting in the second game.

They are? Never heard that before.

Really?? You must have been living under a rock for the last couple decades. Literally every one of their IPs have been universally acclaimed from crash to jak to Uncharted to now the last of us. They have never had to reboot a series and have a constant stream of both technical and creative innovation.

No I haven't been living under a rock, I've never seen anybody say Naughty Dog is the master of story telling (which I have to lol at that) or gameplay (again lol). Graphics I could see but only if we're comparing console games and not pc games. I mean I've played Crash, Jak and Daxter, Uncharted, and The Last of Us and there's nothing masterful about any of them but hey, opinions and all that.

GT and AC actually have good story telling and gameplay. So do Sleeping Dogs, Infamous games, Sunset Overdrive, Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands, Oblivion and Fallout 3 are a few from the top of my head.

Linear games dont always have a great stories and their gameplay mechanics are limited as well. I made a post earlier talking about Tomb Raider is a much deeper game than Uncharted even with an open world.

In a nutshell, your argument holds no water.

Tomb Raider is more open than Uncharted but it uses a wealth of its elements to keep the story on target with the times. Uncharted learned from many games before it crafted the perfect style which inspired Tomb Raiders rebirth.

But Uncharted isnt a perfect style, I feel its a game that gets tons of praise for its story but neglect how shallow the gameplay is.

The Tomb Raider reboot was clearly inspired by gameplay mechanics of Uncharted. But focus on exploration is something Uncharted virtually lacks.

Again, I do acknowledge Uncharted has inspired games. It was also inspired by many games before it... like Tomb Raider.

I think the OP is just confused why Uncharted is such a praised series given how underwheming Uncharted 1 is.

But the obvious response is that wasnt the best game in the series.

I think its more like linear Castlevania titles vs metroidvania Castlevania.

But my feeling with Uncharted is the gameplay offers so little. Last of Us has much more emphasis on exploration and people love that game. But Uncharted (the game with an explorer) offering more exploration is a bad thing? Go figure.

Exploration is great, but it's not neccesary.  I wouldn't push it in Uncharted just because.  If Naughty Dog pushes more for exploration, that's great.  If they don't, it's still great.  As long as the game is enjoyable, that's all that really matters to me.

Well ND has already made four Uncharted titles that feel much the same. I'm flat out saying I want something a little different. A less linear and gallery shooting experience would help.

Actually, I have some faith ND will deliver something more fresh which is why I am going to buy it.

Naughty Dog made 3 Uncharted games. Not 4.

The most important thing for a game is that it's fun.  Uncharted is one of the most fun games for me, and it's because of the gameplay.

Certainly far from shallow.

Shallow games arent inherently terrible by the way. I like Gears of War and thats on the shallow side. But Gears has really great gun play and better multiplayer.

True, I forget the Vita game was handled by another studio. Regardless, it was another game in that series that was more of the same.

Good thing we aren't talking about a shallow franchise. ;)

I certainly wouldn't call it shallow.  But I'm not exactly sure what shallow would entail.

Well, we know it isn't of little depth, so then we know shallow doesn't apply to Uncharted. :P

Btw, which of the three home releases do you favor? Just curious.

Well lets agree to disagree on the shallow thing. But waves and waves of bullet sponge enemies used to pad a game out feels shallow to me.

I am partial to Uncharted 3. I enjoyed the story and levels more. The final level was probably my favorite in the series as well.
