Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mis-Typed Pokemon

Have you ever played Pokemon and realized that a Pokemon's types didn't make sense? Just from an in-universe or conceptual point of view?

Gyarados

This is a big sea monster based on stories of sea serpents and Chinese dragons. Its evolution from Magikarp is a reference to the Chinese legend of the Dragon Gate. It's a member of the Dragon Egg Group, was one of the few original Pokemon capable of learning Dragon Rage, and looks like a Dragon so it's obviously Water/Dragon, right?

No, it's Water/Flying! Or Water/Dark if you Mega-Evolve it. You silly person!

Azurill

Look at this adorable fellow! Marill was introduced in Gold/Silver as a Water type, and the entire line has become part-Fairy since X/Y were released. This blue rodent is supposed to be found by the water's edge, and we first see it in Ruby/Sapphire being used alongside a bunch of Water Pokemon. And its Pokedex entries describe how it uses its tail to float in the water. Heck, its first real attack is Water gun!  Even with the Fairy thing, it's definitely either Water, Fairy, or Water/Fairy, right?

No, it's Normal/Fairy! How could you forget Normal?

Emboar

OMG, they took Ganon and made him into a Pokemon! Well, not exactly, but it's a big, scary-looking, bipedal boar. It is also on fire, but is probably Dark type also. Sure, there's a joke about another Fire/Fighting starter, but this family only learns one Fighting move naturally! And can't you see this guy using moves like Sucker Punch, Payback, Feint Attack, and Torment? Fire/Dark is so obvious and awesome!

No, we haven't filled our Fire/Fighting quota yet.

Floette

Okay, this is just a weird little guy holding onto a flower. So we can assume it's Grass, but I think there might be a bit more to it. Fairy is an option, but it looks like its using that flower to glide, so maybe it's partially Flying type? Still, this is primarily a Grass Pokemon, right? Its signature ability is called Flower Veil!

No, this family Fairy monotype! Stop paying so much attention to the most obvious hints possible!

These in particular stood out. Anybody else think that Game Freak goofed somewhere along the line?

Love and tolerate.

Gyarados was only turned flying cause he would have been OP in gen 1, sadly they never fixed him after that.. poor guy :(

As for Azurill, the evolved forms become water so it works out :p

For me..

Cacturne is found originally in the sandy route, so I've always thought it would be grass/ground or something like that.. but it's Grass and Dark :/

Sableye looks like a Rock type and maybe Dark, but ghost? Don't really see that :/

Girafarig looks like a normal type and maybe a dark type because of it's weird tail, but it's psychic

and Sudowoodo is a dancing tree!

Gyarados was intended to be Water/Dragon back in Gen 1, but due to the fact that Dragon Rage was the only Dragon move back then, that would've given Gyarados no weaknesses, making it ridiculously overpowered.

One Pokemon I never got was Skorupi -> Drapion.

Why is Drapion suddenly Dark type, and not a Bug?

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

My main issue with the series is the Butterfree/Venomoth evo lines

I seriously though the Flabebé was Grass for the longest time until I played X and Y and noticed I wasn't doing super effective damage with my Fire type moves.

I also thought Goomy was also Poison/Dragon for a while as well. And honestly I wouldn't be opposed to it being that...

You repeated what I said, that means you own me money ultra-kun :) Also DRapion confused me when I first played Diamond. His typing made me unsure of what attacks to send out cause I thought he was a bug.

I can get behind Floette and its evolutionary relatives being Fairy/Grass or Grass/Fairy.

I would also like for Stunfisk to be either Water/Ground or Water/Electric.

Pixel Art can be fun.

I used to think sodowoodo was a grass type, and there was a time when I couldn't figure the typing of Ludicolo (it's water/grass for some random reason)

Gyarados being Water/Flying totally makes sense! Don't you see them flying around in the sky sometimes too..? xD

... Yeah, not only is it weird, but is kind of destroys it with the x 4 electric weakness.

I'm pretty sure there were some types that bothered me, but I just can't think of any now atm...
