Forums - Movies & TV - Overrated animated films?

The incredibles and Gru. They are really weak if you ask me.

I cant believe people thinks Ghibli movies are overrated, they are the very best exemple of great animated movies, even more than Pixar and Disney. But thats only my opinion.

Without Disney, there IS no Ghibli. They practically created the full feature length animated format. The stuff they did was revolutionary and those classic movies (Snow White, Cinderella etc.) are still being purchased and enjoyed 80 years later. I think if you asked Ghibli who the better studio was, they've dying laughing.

Having said that, I like their movies too. But they're a hard sell in the west. Very Japanese. That doesn't bode well with everyone.

I know, but I think Ghibli has reached heights that nobody else has reached, specially on Mononoke and Spirited Away. Anyway, I think the 3 of them are awesome more or less equally.

Akira and Ghost In The Shell, while very pretty to look at, are highly overrated IMHO. I've only managed to sit through each of them once without turning them off or changing the channel out of shear boredom.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Hmmm....  I didn't know that Planes wasn't made by Pixar.  Good to know.

As for Peter Pan, the portrayal of the native americans is racially stereotypical, and I think this is what would get Disney in trouble if they released it now.  I was rather embarrassed when I showed it to my kids.  Just like you, since I hadn't seen it in a while, my memories of it were good.

Wikipedia has a list of the controversial items:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Pan_(1953_film)#Racial_stereotyping_of_Native_Americans

Right, different times and attitude. The book was writen in 1911, although I haven't read it so don't know how they are portrayed in the book (or seen the non-panto version of the play). This said the wiki page says 'in recent times', which is fair, yet Hook would see them as savages and call them inappropriate names because of who he is. I generally don't see this stereotype as bad, it's just a stereotype, they are generally considered good in the film.

Hmm, pie.

Movies are supposed to be self explanatory but even with previous knowledge about japanese folklore, the movie remains a series of randomness put together. You have a princess mononoke avatar, now that's a proper anime movie.

Well ofcourse, Mononoke is the best movie of all time! Yet that doesn't explain everything either.
Spirited away was amazing to watch for the first time, I never had a feeling of being lost in the plot, only wonder. But true, the script is a bit random.
Much preferred over movies like Tangled and Brave anyway. And how to train your dragon 2 is overrated as well. Did not need a sequel. And now there's a third coming, it's going to be the next ice age.

I never said the plot is easy to get lost in, it's just not very good with the way everything happens (it was pretty good untill she started working, tough).

Disney never managed to make a good animated feature over 2 hours though. Fantasia is the only one at 125 min and that's a collection. Disney also never managed to make animated features an accepted medium in the West for mature storytelling. Disney movies are very formulaic, though very charming, I also like a bit of randomness, surprise or real life situations. Disney is at its best with its song and dance routine.
Disney invented a lot of animation techniques, that doesn't say Ghibli hasn't improved on them. The lighting techniques of studio Ghibli are second to none.

I'd say a heresy, but I dislike all Disney movies except The Lion King. I adore Pixar, though, except Cars 1/2.

Has anyone seen Chaar Sahibzaade? It's currently the highest scoring animated feature of all time on imdb.
(Only 1/100th of the votes of the lion king though, scoring is a but unreliable with low numbers)

The sacrifices of the four sons of Guru Gobind Singh ji (tenth guru of Sikhs) - Baba Ajit Singh ji, Baba Jujhar Singh ji, Baba Zorawar Singh ji and Baba Fateh Singh ji. Ring a bell? :/

I've never heard of it.

Ummm... Carl... When you post that gif, it looks like Snow White is pointing at your avatar. You didn't mean that, right?

Frozen should be nowhere near Disney's most successful. Also, the guy who was quick to say Ghibli should be sterilized as soon as possible.
