The above is pretty much what your average online 4-player free for all battle is like nowadays, everyone doing nothing much and not attacking each other, unless there's a fool who starts a fight, in which case everyone else gangs up on them. Yeah I'm guilty of this as shown, but I do similar things in Mario Kart and Splatoon, I'm a troll afterall! It can be so hilarious especially this instance where the guy playing as Cloud would change his name inbetween matches to voice his disapproval. "Team up Really!?" and "DOLPHIN STOP!" made me lol!

However, do I want to be trolling all the time? Naw, variety is the spice of life, but therein lies the problem. Almost every group is like this, a massive difference from a year ago where this was a rare occurrence. Sometimes, I do want to actually battle, so joining 10 groups in a row where no one is fighting can get annoying. It wouldn't be so bad if the Tournament mode was still kicking, since there people had more of a reason to fight so they did, but there aren't enough players so regular tourneys rarely fill up in time and user made ones take forever to find a match.

There shouldn't be this much of a hassle to play the default mode of a game the way it's ment to be played, but I suppose it's not really Nintendo's fault, they can't control what exactly their players do, or can they? Mario Kart and Splatoon don't have this problem (not nearly as bad anyway), likely because there's always something to gain from playing, namely VR and experience points. Smash only has enjoyment to gain, which yeah should be enough, but apparently it's just not. Their next Smash needs to have more reasons to play it as intended, or else it's online will become yet another joke.

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

The question is, will it solve fixing this issue?

I haven't nearly played Smash as much as I have with Splatoon and I've seen plenty of times where level 50s go trolling around in Splatoon. I've joined them a few times too because it's pretty amusing, but even with a level and reward system, it's not really fixed as it depends on the player.. though trolling is not a common occurrence, that is for sure

Rather, I think the main issue is that the 4 for all fight system is flawed to begin with.. because staying alive is best so not engaging in combat can help you win :/

Well, they do have it split up between 'for fun' and 'for glory' xD Maybe that's one way to have fun? If you want real competition, go to 'for glory' xD

Not for nothing, but I'm frankly not sure what I'm looking at here. How does this demonstrate that an achievement system is needed? I came into this thread thinking this would be about how Smash 4's challenges keep you entertained with the game or something and that's why all Nintendo games should have it, but now I'm more confused than ever.

Also if this is how you play then no wonder you are bored.

Did it really look like we were trying to win? The Bayonetta player actually let me win, which was unfortunate cause I wanted to see what would happen when we all die at the same time hehe. The only winning that's cared about is making sure the attacker does not win. Otherwise, it usually comes down to sudden death where it's either who can kill themselves first or just letting the bomb-ombs end things. Besides not scoring points wont help you win. Also my point in bringing up Mario Kart/Splatoon isn't that trolling is non-existent in those games, just that it's far, far less common.

I do play the other modes, but the main draw for me has always been the default 4 player 2 minute free for alls.

Did you read the OP? I'm clearly talking about it's online.

My default playstyle is going with the flow, so if everyone else isn't attacking I wont either and vice versa. I'll sometimes be the attacker on purpose just to see if I can overcome the gangbanging, but that is definitely not what a free for all is supposed to be.

Couple weeks ago, I discovered a website called Anther's Ladder, and let me just say, Anther's Ladder is what Smash online should've been, it just does everything right.

If Anther's Ladder wanted to appeal towards the casual player as well, it wouldn't be too hard to implement friendly free for all matches either.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Oh I see. Hmm, not sure what to say, then. I often played teams with a friend and never ran into this issue. I do hear some people goof off like that for some reason.

I haven't played the new SSB but if I did and saw people just jacking off and standing in the corner, I'd just go on the attack and pummel them into fighting. Seems like a simple fix.
