Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Which Fire Emblem game should I play first?

Hi everyone :)

I´ve never played a Fire emblem game and I don´t know where to begin :S It has to be a GBA,DS or 3DS game. I really want to buy one of the Fates game but I´m not sure if I´m going to understand the story :S

If you have to compare them with Shining Force saga what would be an important thing in favour of Fire Emblem?

Thanks in advance :)

Awakening. You absolutely gotta play this one.

Start with Awakening or just get Fates. Stories aren't really super related between the games. I think a few are direct sequels, but Fates and Awakening are not those games. That said, both have an easier no perma-death mode so that you can play more comfortably. Honestly, it's probably the inclusion of the easier no perma-death difficulty that rocketed Fire Emblem from niche to well known series in the space of one game after decades.

Personally, I thought Awakening was a little too easy even with perma-death going, but maybe Fates will be a touch more difficult.

For the most part, every Fire Emblem game is standalone, so you don't need to have played any other game to understand what's happening. Fire Emblem Fates has no real connection to any other Fire Emblem game.

Awakening (the 3DS one) is the one with the highest universal appeal, and probably the one that does the best job of introducing a new player to the series.

It's not my favourite game in the series, but it's an excellent game, and the best starting point.

I found Awakening to be a pretty good starting point. Not only is it easy on newcomers (or hard if you want it to be) but it's physically the most accessible FE game right now.

Though if you have a Wii U you can choose to get the two GBA games as well. But they might not be as inviting to newcomers.

Awakening is the first FE game I played, and it felt very beginner friendly overall, with natural difficulty rise, so I definitely recommend that one.

I think Blazing Sword on GBA is also a good one, but I never finished it, so I have no idea how much the difficulty ramps.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Awakening. And if you like it, obviously get Fates.

And if you want more, definitely try to get the Radiant series, (Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn)

You aren't finding the Radiant games anywhere for cheap. I paid $75 for my copy of Radiant Dawn last summer.

But yeah, start with Awakening. Easily accessible, most newcomer friendly, and although there are elements of the lore that will mean more to you if you are a longtime fan, you are not at all required to have played any previous games to get it. Fates is also it's own completely independent story and lore.

Awakening. Mostly because you can turn off permanent death.

You might also want to just wait for Birthright, which is made for beginners.

Sacred Stones also wasn't too hard, at least for Erica's path.

Yeah they aren't cheap... Unfortunately.
