Forums - Gaming Discussion - Does taking a game to kickstarter make you want it less?

When you see a game thats been on kickstarter do you want it less than one that is self funded? Does it come off as a less professional game? Or do you not mind at all.

I originally became a software developer from my love of video games and a dream of one creating my own, due to the lack of game developers in NZ i joined a generic software company building software for various different companies whilst coding small game ideas in my spare time. I want to start getting more serious about this game now, but im trying to decide if i want this to be a project that takes me 10 years in my spare time or 3 years with kickstarter help 😂 but i feel personally that kickstarter puts me off games, i don't know why lol im hoping im the only one.

As long as it is a game I enjoy, I don't care how it gets funded. That being said, I have never personally helped fund a Kickstarter before. Too much of a gamble in my opinion. It would take a lot for me to put money in on one. I considered Bloodstained, Shenmue 3, and Hero's Song but ultimately decided against it.

I am a bit cautious after Mighty No. 9.

Kickstarter doesn't make me want a game any less. It's more about the developer, in my mind.

I have my reservations in regards to Kickstarter or paid early access. The main reason I dislike it is because many developers have little motivation to finish their game after it's been funded. Hey, they already got their money, and they won't really get a whole lot more by finishing the game. We've seen this happen to several Kickstarter or similar games.

As long as you have the motivation to finish the game after it's been funded, and you can get your "investors" to trust you on that, I think you'll be in good shape.

There is certainly a stigma from numerous Kickstarter projects thus far. Bottom line, Kickstarter is better than nothing. If Kickstarter was the only viable way to make something like Shenmue 3 happen, I'll take it.

No, but the the quality Kickstarter games are often to low and many of the games are only half games because they failed to reach the stretch goals.

Don't copy random editorials.

Hate went a company with enough $$, asking to gamer to take risk for them.... NO THX.

That's the thing aswell i feel these kickstarter projects majorly under estimate the cost and time it takes to develop a game. I would only want to release something i thought was perfect

Nothing is ever really perfect, not even with video games. I don't mind KS because so far it's brought up new devs or new games to the field that otherwise get easily ignored by big publishers and corps who don't want to invest in such an idea, clearly after a few successful KS projects do these publishers take note and start trying to copy an already successful idea which shows that KS itself can work.

Devs on the other hand though are always my main concern whether it's KS or devs getting hype coverage from their publishers/backing company, those that hype up a game that might otherwise bomb can come from any side, not only just KS and I've more or less always seen things that way because we've always had devs or studios hyping up a game only to find it really sucked or didn't live up to our expectations along with generally not being polished.

The way I think about it is that KS is a good viable stage to present your ideas and dreams and if you do have the skills and the money/team to pull it off then chances are you can find success and that's honestly a good good thing to have for gamers than just having publishers who don't care about you but how much money they could make and what safe bets to go for.

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

Nope i don't mind. Now if one of the games that i've supported would actually release, that's a different story. Other tham Mighty No 9, which keeps getting pushed back, the rest are slated for later this year and 2017.
