Splatoon may have sold more on Wii, but Wii U was not a problem for it to sell 4M. MK is almost at 8M. The Wii U was not a problem for those games, why it was for DKTF?

Because outside of it's first game, DK isn't as big as Mario Kart, so of course it isn't going to sell as much no matter what system they're on. Splatoon is basically Mario Kart for shooters. Over 1 million sold on a 12 million base is still great anyway. Now stop diverting from my main point, being that Metroid would not have been a better decision, only a worse one, based on your own criteria.

Donkey Kong released at a point in the Wii U's life where people were getting burnt out on all the platformers releasing. I think Donkey Kong is still bigger, but Splatoon will gain a lot of attention quickly because it is a fresh idea from Nintendo.

Damn I hope nintendo gives out dk numbers for the fy report, so we can put this to rest. If the game did 1.5mil lifetime that still would be a good success.

It was fun reading all the post in this thread.

And Splatoon was a new IP not bigger than MK, yet it pulled impressive numbers.

Metroid could have been worse, or could have been better. The only thing we know now is that Tropical Freeze was a bad decision.

Well the awnser for that question is quite simple actually, DKTF is not a multiplayer game.

Yes, it has a 2-player mode but its clearly not developed for that purpose.

Look at the Top 10 best selling WiiU games, look how many don't have multiplayer. You have your awnser.

Then why Mario Party 10 didn't sell as good?

Proud to be the first cool Nintendo fan ever

Number ONE Zelda fan in the Universe

DKCTF didn't move consoles

Prediction: No Zelda HD for Wii U, quietly moved to the succesor

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

As good as what? As Splatoon? Nintendo Land and Wii Party already filled the library, there was no need for another party game. Just like there was no need for another platform game at time when DKTF was released. But we have already agreed on this form the beginning.

Anyway Mario Party is stil 11th, so my points holds up. The most successful games on the system are voted to multiplayer. Multiplayer is the main reason to own a Nintendo home console for most players and that's why games like Mario Kart, Splatoon and Smash Bros are selling a lot despite the install base. For the average user, 3DS is the best option to play single player games since it's less expansive and it has a larger library.

Are you implying every game has an equal chance of success regardless of it's genre, style, target audience, marketing, difficulty, etc.? I can only guess since you left out what your point was.

We know Prime 3 sold not even 2 million compared to Returns 6+ million, thus DK atleast had a chance of being a multimillion seller on Wii U, while the odds for Metroid are no chance in hell. And again It makes more sense to please the bigger audience first so they made the right choice. We'd likely get a great game eitherway, so why not make the one that is more liked.

Retro is extremely talented. What this reveals is that Nintendo needs to allow their best Western studio (and one of their best in general) have freedom to make a western style game. Splatoon proves that genres that are popular out here that Nintendo hasn't done before, with a Nintendo flavor added to them, can both do well out here and in Japan. Xenoblade X and Splatoon should show Nintendo that they should embrace genres that they haven't paid much attention to in the past. There is money to be made!

Retro pitched TF to Nintendo though? Nintendo just green lighted it, TF is the game retto wanted to make

I thought I read that TF was forced upon them after 2-3 ideas they had failed to get greenlight from Nintendo?

Hmmm I thought I'd read that retro pitched TF to ninty because they still had aload off ideas left over from Returns. Wonder what they working on now

The problem I see here is from Nintendo and how they manage their own teams, not from Retro. You have so low expectations from many of thier japanese studios that Retro is supposed to make up for their incompetence and release the games they aren't able to make. But that's something a single studio can't realistically do atm.

Actually, that's the whole reason Nintendo acquired Retro in the first place.

Their original purpose, back in the 6th gen, was to make more mature, Western-oriented games to complement Nintendo's more light-hearted offerings.

Lately, Nintendo have lost sight of this, hence Retro's games no longer bring the diversity to Nintendo's catalogue that they used to, and as a result, gamers just aren't as excited about Retro as they used to be.
