Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony done with handhelds?

Just wanted to see what people thought.. Do you think Sony will be done in the handheld market after the Vita? Or do you think it has done enough to warrant a Vita(2) or whatever it might be? I own a Vita and I enjoy it.. but the most use it gets by far (in my household) is for remote play. so 95% of the time it is being used, it is being used to play a PS4 game when the TV is occupied. It has a great library of games... but it just never really had that 'must have' factor. Is Sony making money on it? or breaking even? I don't know the specifics but I was curious what direction you think they should go in the handheld market after the Vita.

Hmm, it's kinda hard to say. Due to the Vita selling rather poorly, this could be Sony's last handheld, but they could end up making another one if they don't want to throw in the towel just yet. If they do decide to make another, I hope they try harder than they did with the Vita.

Sony possibly has another chance if it adopts android style.
Vita could have been so much bigger had they made it a phone hybrid.

With Nintendo pushing the mobile entry, I can't imagine Sony would just let them take it.

I hope so.
I don´t like portable gaming and it pleases me that every sony studio is focused on the PS4.

Considering Sony is killing it with the PS4 and the handheld market has shrunk enough to give troubles even to Nintendo, I think they will not continue their handheld. They'll keep the Vita around for a long time, but after they discontinue it, they'll be done with dedicated videogame handhelds.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

It's hard to say? More like you are afraid to voice a confident opinion.

How many people in America and Europe would buy another Sony handheld after they've seen how Sony has treated the Vita? Who would trust a company that has not provided support for its own platform? If Sony had had serious intentions to make another handheld, they would have at least tried to bridge the gap until the launch of a successor. But the way they treated the Vita, it's blatantly clear where things are going for Sony.

Yeah, you could say I don't want to say anymore than that. The Vita community will have counter-arguements to those questions, such as Sony did support the Vita and still do, but that support ranges from different levels, such as releasing 1st party games and publishing 3rd party games. Though, as for how Sony treats the Vita, I can't really provide any defense to that. Despite that, the system still gets a lot of games for it, so there is still something going for the Vita. And at least Vita owners would certainly buy another Sony handheld.

Though in the end, I guess I would say Sony would not make another one, largely due to sales. All the 3rd party support wouldn't be enough if a successor sold as much as the Vita.

and despite that, the Vita still gets more games and support than the 3DS from third party publishers

Probably not, unfortunately. The less options the worse as a handheld gamer like myself

I believe that Sony is not done with handhelds (in their current format), Kaz mentioned that gaming is a pillar going forward and whatever the landscape for handheld is going to look like in the future I'm sure they will be there. One product a company does not make, at least when it comes to Sony. They have shown that thru hacking situation and et al, they still have a very strong loyal base of customers and 3rd parties have shown to support them even when sales are lack luster (see PS3 and Vita). Their first parties properties were not suited for a new generation of mobile gamer but I'm sure if they were to use the same reform changes they did for the PS4, people would buy their handheld.

I think that they're done with it, now their developers who worked on Vita games probably already moved over to VR games so I see it even more unlikely for them to try again with an Handheld...
