What's more impressive is there is a chance splatoon will become the most popular/biggest ip in Japan in the near future. It's already number 1 for HC games this gen with only FFXV and maybe DQ11 giving it competition and that's with a 3mil installbase.

I wouldn't be surprise if it comes up to pokemon/AC level tier

It's a legit phenomenon, it's too bad it's stuck on such a dud of a system (market wise).

It's like watching an incredible superstar individual athlete stuck on a really, really bad team, kinda like Michael Jordan on some of those bad early Bulls teams lol.

I think Nintendo may have to prioritize getting it onto the NX very early in the life cycle. Probably also been an eye opening lesson to Nintendo that they need to try more original games. To be honest I never understood why they just abandoned the shooter marketspace, GoldenEye was a huuuuuge hit for them, Perfect Dark did well, and then ... Geist and nothing after that. Really short sighted.

Splatoon success is not coming from the user base who plays COD, Battlefield, Destiny etc., and its just because its colorful and kid friendly fun game with multiplayer. These days multplayer games do great than Single player games due to social networks and Nintendo user base is more about cartoony kid friendly games that parents buy for their chilldrens which can be proved from XCX(it should have been costed more to make) and Splatoon sales. Nintendo is all about cartoony kids and family related content games only, but not for realistic Matured content like shooters with blood, sex and violence if you look at the sales.

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

That is because they are not the ones who made Perfect Dark. If Nintendo had bought Rare, we would probably have seen some more Perfect Dark games. Also, Perfect Dark Zero would have turned out to be a better game.

We are soon (very soon?) looking at the Wii U / 3DS and still making profit, all though not much, and that the era has been pretty disappointing sales wise. Considering everything it was not a bad report.

From NeoGaf, I think this is the first time we've seen an official 3DS unit breakdown?

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=194009780&postcount=320

Nintendo 3DS sales breakdown by model (units)

Nintendo 3DS - 26,170,000
Nintendo 3DS XL - 19,590,000
Nintendo 2DS - 4,670,000
New Nintendo 3DS - 1,710,000
New Nintendo 3DS XL - 5,800,000

Total - 57,940,000

Nintendo Wii U sales breakdown by region (units)

Q3 FY 2015

Japan - 430,000 (+34.4% YoY)
The Americas - 900,000 (-10.9% YoY)
Others - 560,000 (-3.4% YoY)

Q1 - Q3 FY 2015

Japan - 750,000 (+53.1% YoY)
The Americas - 1,450,000 (-11.6% YoY)
Others - 870,000 (-3.3% YoY)

Conclusions: The 2DS flopped, and Wii U hardware is down in North America and Europe for the quarter and the fiscal year in North America and Europe but up in Japan largely because of Splatoon. So it seems like it's moving systems in Japan, but not in NA/Europe so much. The smaller New 3DS also has fairly modest sales.

The Americas in particular seem to be losing interest in the Wii U faster than other markets give those YoY percentage drops.

The 2DS flopped? I don't really think so. It sold enough units to those people that either were only interested in one game or were looking for a cheap console to their kids. If anything, the N3DS has flopped, they could have only released the XL model and profited from less costs and the bigger price of the XL version.n

You know it deserves the GOTY.

It flopped dude. Numbers don't lie.

I don't think the 2DS has done that bad, especially compared to the n3DS model.

Am I right in thinking 2DS is still yet to release in Japan and the n3DS is still not out in NA?

2DS. Released on october 2013. 28 months on the market. 4,670,000 units sold.  Around 166.785 units sold/month.

New 3DS. Released on october 2014. 16  months on the market. 1,710,000 units sold.  Around 106.875 units sold/month.

If the regular N3DS has fairly moderate sales, then the 2DS has them too, since it has sold more monthly than the N3DS. Nintendo really could have released the XL model only, it's the one that attracts its audience the best.

-For first 9 months of this fiscal year Nintendo made profit of $330m.
-Wii U hardware and software are up in first 9 months compared with last year.
-3DS is going down with previous year, but that isn't nothing unusual because 3DS is in its 5. year.
