Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Witness is getting pirated hard — creator Jonathan Blow warns it’ll impact future projects

This does not mean the game is not having success on Steam, it was the best selling game of the platform at release.

It screams like the whole scenario SE had with Tomb Raider reboot "5 mill is not enough". Clearly he's looking at the torrents and not those who are interested in his game and paying him for it like most other devs do. THe only time we see this kind of news is when someone wants to piss in the wind and create a scuffle because piracy has been around for a very, very long time and we haven't seen every dev pull out a megaphone like this all the time.

Can't wait to see people Steam Spy and pull their own mini SE scenarios and claim it;s not enough, the downplay towards the platform and the game is going to be redicilous and overshadow what is meant to be a rgeat game and all because people have personal beef.

This is why you don't release simultaneously with consoles. GTAV taught as that. Honestly a lot of PC gamers pressured him though. The Witness was supposed to be console exclusive and this is what happens when you listen to fans all the time.

It's the overhype Blow...or maybe over-expectations.

Saying this as someone who has Myst in 'Top 10 franchises with at least 3 entries', this is quite niche genre...if it was not for Myst, the genre would never touch, even for that brief moment, mainstream audience, and even that only happened on PC.

Honestly, once he went on Sony's stage and introduced the game to their audience, he pretty much changed dynamic of what that game is vs how it will be perceived. In my opinion, he should've kept it away from PC for a while.

That's actually a good point, Myst and 7th Guest/11th Hour games weren't hugely popular.  I loved them though, so did my brother (told him about Witness the other day, he got it).

He's making the same mistake movie companies do and game publishers used to make with used games. Each pirated/used copy does not represent a sale. Far from it.

It's weird that he understands price has nothing to do with it, but then says he might look into DRM for future games. He's basically saying pirates won't buy the game regardless of price, so lets slap some DRM on there to harass the people who do buy the game.

Those that "pressured" him are buying it on Steam though, unless of course you want to be bold and call all PC gamers filfthy scummy worthless pirates because I honestly feel that's what some of you are easily grasping at already.

I wonder what happens with PC exclusives and the same GTA V scenario...

I don't think you have any receipts for those guys.

I wouldn't think you would either to back things up.

End of the day a whole platform is going to get easily generalized when something like this happens rather than looking at the general picture let alone the actual sales he even gets, none of that is going to get paid any attention to, if it does it's going to be used in a bad light despite those that paid to play the game. Of course two other platforms will be entirely excepmnt from this because we all know they can do no wrong what so ever.

That's messed up. How about don't release you future games on PC and do steam only.

That's a real bummer. Why peeps gotta do this? Just pay the guys who work so hard on these things.. : X
