Forums - Sales Discussion - COD: BOIII PS4 to become best selling COD SKU ever?

http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/?name=call+of+duty

Its currently at 10.87 million or so as of Jan 9 (without others added). It made 120k sales week 3-9 Jan just from US and Europe, so likely around 150k when numbers come in. The best selling COD SKU is currently COD:MW3 for XB360 at 14.66 mil. It needs around 3.9 million more. COD traditionals legs out well throughout the year so I think it can do it.

Some may point to the fact that MW3 slip its sales more evenly due to more comparible Marketshare between PS3 and XB360, which is true. However, last gen versions of BOIII still have sold over 3 mil or so. So if you add PS3+X360+XB1 SKUs it almost equals PS4's sales. So to me while it may not split current gen sales as fairly as in the past it still has to split sales 4 ways.

I also think its very possible BOIII could become the best selling COD ever. Its currently at a little over 20 million already. COD: MW3 sold just over 30.

Taking digital into account this is a given. Back in 2011 when MW3 came digital distribution was still in its infancy. Now the digital attach rates are much higher. Even with a low by current standard digital % of say 15% its already over 23 million and adding at least 200k a week all formats.

I am not a huge COD fan these days (have not gotten into the MP since MW3 actually), but I do find it intesting that most everyone thought it was in decline and here we are possibly having the biggest one yet.

No. But it will come close to BO2 tho. Call of Duty is passed it's prime already. Although it's still popular, it'll never be as big as it used to be.

I showed the numbers, how do you come to this conclusion? Many believe COD to be past its prime, but when it sell almost equal to or more than it ever has before how can this be true?

Physical sales will come close but likely not pass. With digital, I wouldn´t rule out that it is already close to passing.

true, I am going off the assumption CoD has a decent but not great digital ratio. I am making this on the assumption than casuals and mainstream are less likely to buy digital and COD is a casual/mainstream franchise.  So I think 10-20%. However I would not rule out closer to 30% (which seems to be a recent trend for bigger titles) if I saw some evidence of this.

It's overtracked, along with a lot of other PS4 software, and most likely XBO software as well. It will be adjusted soon enough (Machina himself said confirmed this).

Agreed. I think COD still has an image of being mostly physical (bundles has been it´s main advertisement since many years back) so it might have a bit less digital attach ratio, but I´m guessing atleast 15% digital.

Eh despite the Steam version of Fallout 4 being popular in comparison to CoD, and thus digital. CoD Black OPS 3 still doubled it digitally. So I imagine the Console Digital versions did well. https://www.superdataresearch.com/blog/us-digital-games-market/

Then of course there will be next year...

you are using VGC numbers, which are highly inaccurate. from the official sales we have, BO3 isnt doing as well as MW2, BO, MW3 or BO2. so BO3 having the highest selling CoD SKU is highly unlikely
