So, because of our modern smartphones, tablets and co the general opinion is, that handhels will have/already have a hard time and the market share will decrease.

Do you think this trend will be "forever", or might there be a phase in some years were handhelds get alot more attractive again.

If you think about it, its pretty much similar to what happend ~20-30 years ago to consoles.

Pc started to get better games, games that are on par with console games. But still, consoles are selling great these times.

Many people dont want to spend to much money on a pc, so they get a console for gaming. Maybe we will see something similar in the future, for now i believe many people are okay with upgrading there phones ever 1-3 years. But in the future (in 5-10 years) this trend might be over and most people will just buy a new phone every 5-10 years (like with pcs).

Thoughts?

It will be forever. As the years go on. More and more new kids will just have a smartphone. No attachment to a handheld ever. And then that's it. Can anyone here say they saw kids with a 3DS or a VITA? Either walking down the street, in a train, or in a Pizza place? In recent times, I sure haven't. The people who like them will quit naturally, or force quit.

Because, at some point. Nintendo will have to either give up making handheld games. And just make them on your console. Or just put stuff on smartphones. It may take another 10 years. Or even 20. But if nothing is invented that forces people to buy one. That's it. Nothing really beats $1 or free. If parents are willing to buy them that phone. Forget everything else. Even if they say they have one. If it's not on them. They're making a decision to pick the phone, over the handheld. That will just make them not care about it, after a bit. Since no one really likes carrying a handheld and a phone, together.

My opinion: The NX will just speed this up. If the handheld isn't actually special. And all the games work on the console. I'm not buying the handheld, at all. And the majority will do the same. So the line could self terminate.

I think there will always be a place for dedicated gaming handhelds in the market... just it might be getting smaller. It could be companies need to change things a bit to stay in the handheld game.

I don't want to say this but people aren't interested in handhelds anymore. :/

Yes they will with NX.

Comeback? Doesn't seem likely.

But I would always want to have handhelds to continue in the market in the future. Gaming on handheld devices is just so much more enjoyable and appreciative than playing a game on smartphones. Practically nobody cares about Smartphone games and is more of a way just to kill time than actually enjoying them.

Yep. I expect the 3DS successor, which will probably launch later this year, to be a huge hit. Nintendo has always been a huge name in the handheld market and they know what they did wrong with the 3DS and can improve it.

PlayStation Vita successor? Nah... not going to happen.

Yes, they'll never even go. Handhelds are in every way (except maybe raw power) superior to smartphones and tablets. Even if they don't appeal much to the casual crowd, there will always be a market for handhelds.

If by comeback, you mean getting the high number of sales the original GameBoy (~120 million) and the DS (~150 million) got, I really doubt it... but even with the damage made by mobile, I like to think there´s still a good number of consumers that can keep a dedicated gaming handheld alive..ofcourse, provided they find the device a good proposition.
