Forums - Gaming Discussion - Xbox One from a PlayStation Fan Point of View

I'm a sony fan, and I'll like to think for good reason. But hey, I'm a sony fan so my "good reason" is probably biased.

However, I don't want to or like seeing anyone fail. Including MS. Competition is great.

My problem with MS though is something I think most dont seem to talk about and that culminated in the fiasco of what was the XB1 launch. Ms is just a very very anti consumer company. They abandoned the XB and jumped into the 360, then practically pulled all exclusive support for the 360 almost 2yrs before the launch of the XB1. then with the xb1 they started off trying to tell the gaming community that games aren't that important.

I don't know, MS isn't just a company I can trust with my money. The XB1 will do well enough tho and that's all that matters at the end. As it stands they are kinda doing better or on par with the 360.

Why do we all give don mattrick so much hate? I mean he wasn't the only one in charge and I don't think he had that much power to make quick decisions nor would he had enough power to say "no let's not do that". The whole company was behind that not just don mattrick.
the only thing I would say what a idiot he was were his comments like no internet? buy a xbox 360 ect., but funny enough phil spencer also made some "dumb" or rather questionable comments that were controversial discussed on vgchartz.

Sony/Nintendo whore here. The Xbox One is just another machine that can play the same games as the PS4 to me, the exclusives aren't worth it. I have nothing against microsoft, it's just that Sony did everything a lot better than them.

On Topic, ive liked the Xbox One so far.

I dont consider myself to be a fan of Xbox, i dont like the way they do business and the way they handle the division.

So far everything has been good with the X1, there are a few thing that i dont like:

  • The console is too internet dependant.
  • The pins dissapear from time to time, which is very annoying.
  • The OS is a fucking mess, and yes, im talking about the last update.
  • The Xbox Store is also a fucking mess.
  • The controller is too clicky, even with my headset on i can still hear the D-Pad *click* *click* *click*.
  • The Sleep/Wake Up function is too buggy, sometimes it doesnt load the game that i was playing.
  • The catalog of exclusives is somewhat a rinse and repeat from previous generation, which i assume is a good thing for harcore Xbox fans, but not people like me.
  • The console is BIG, but honestly that doesnt bother me that much. The power brick on the other hand...

I dont know man...it is a good console IMO, but to tell you the truth i bought it because of the Black Friday Sale impulse. I wasnt planning to own the console.

This are the games that i own:

  1. COD: Black Ops III
  2. Ori and the Blind Forest
  3. Ryse
  4. Rise of the Tomb Raider
  5. Divinity
  6. Gears of War Remaster

While I'm guessing you are trying to say you enjoy the Wii-U because of these, don't forget that the Wii-U cannot launch a game if it hasn't been updated from the net, Like Wii-U updated, take away internet, put in an older game which hasn't been played in a while or buy a new game and try to play it without net.

While you do need to install games on both X1/PS4 you can do it offline from the disks and jump right in, even if they have updates, you can choose not to apply them and just play the games.

As for the topic - I think the X1 is looking like a lot better of a purchase now than it was at launch, but at the same time it took them so long to do the 180s on stuff like Always online and Kinect I think they've done more lasting damage which they can't 180, it's not possible for MS to change the fact that it's system is being outsold almost 4:1 each week by the ps4, in terms of future software any dev can see that there is 4 times as much chance of their game being purchased if they bring it to the PS4 than the X1, on top of the fact that if it's a game which is multiplayer focused then it would clearly do a whole lot better on the system where the bigger player base is at since no one wants to buy an online game with the fear of deserted servers in far less time, especially given the asking price of games this generation.

On top of that I think MS is going to have to put a bag over digital foundry and drag them down a lane, because if you happen to venture onto any gaming forum or youtube even you're going to see those digital foundry comparisons showing up the fact that not only is the X1 less of a good investment because of its confused birth.... but also even if all of its issues were resolved you are still left with a system which has to jump through hoops to achieve the same graphical performance as its rival, again... buying a €70 game stings a bit, but if you are buying that game knowing that the exact same money will buy you the game running better with higher res then yeeeee smart money goes the way of the Ps4 again.

One massive thing the X1 has over the PS4 tho, it's the underdog, weirdly I know but when it comes to things like BC on the X1, you get them doing a ton of work to bring X360 games to the system (every games with gold title going to the X360 is now also a X1 playable title) all for the low low cost ... of free, I mean in comparison to the PS4 offering of allowing it's users to buy PS2 games for $15 or so and not even so much as a whisper of suggestion a discount for people who've bought those games before (disk based on the ps2, or digitally on the ps3). I think that is pretty much a slap in the face when you compare how the two companies/systems are handling Backwards compatibility and handling the "nickle and diming" of their fans which is where the X360 got so much flak last gen (damn rightly so putting things like IE and Youtube behind golds paywall).

I could definitely see myself buying an X1 at a point the way the console is now for gaming, just for Halo 5 and the Rare Replay collection alone, but in terms of if you don't have a console, it would be a very determined Xbox fan I think to see the X1 as a better purchase than the PS4 when you have them for (I think) almost the same price.

As for the bias I hold in gaming... well I have close to 200 retail X360 games, only have a PS4 from this gen so far.... before the X360 I was a huge GC fan, still have around 180 games for that which I still love and play often, so yeah my Bias is where great games are, I have pretty much every other system each gen btw, so of course own a ps2/Xbox/Ps3/Wii but just saying that over each gen I've never stayed with a brand just for the brand, I've gone with the most enjoyable console for great games.

Around the Network

Let me start off by blowing the minds of anyone who knows me: I played OG Xbox roughly twice as much as PS2.

Between Crimson Sea, Halo 1/2, Phantom Crash, and KOTOR 1/2, I didn't have as much time for PS2. At the time, I appreciated Xbox's lineup more, and my multiplatform games like Legacy of Kain: Defiance played better on my Xbox.

But when 7the generation rolled around, I saw something else: a machine that could play the largest selection of Gen 5 and 6 games, while have more games moving forward. I invested in a PS3, one that I have to this day. After the PS3 games started to underperform and games like Fable 2 came out, I bought an Xbox 360. Which RRoD'd. Microsoft replaced it, and the replacement RRoD'd. And it happened over. And over. And over. I no longer have an Xbox 360, as I did not replace the last one. My games got traded in at GameStop, and I decided to run PS3 for the rest of the generation.

Fast forward to May 2013. Microsoft revealed the XB1, showing off their console in an attempt to slap Sony in the face for not showing theirs. Then they later confirmed that you have to check in online once every 24 hours. And there are restrictions on used games. And you can't turn off Kinect. And Kinect will ship with every XB1, no matter what.

The Internet collectively said no, but Microsoft said yes. I want to be clear that I respected that. They stuck to their guns and had a clear plan in mind that the public didn't see.

Then we roll around to e3. They come out on stage and are practically boo'd off of it, then turn around and say they've listened to the fans. This is where I take issue.

If they card what the fans thought, they would have changed the plans prior to e3. Even if they had no plans set in place to replace what they had, "We don't have any current plans, but we're working on them based on prior feedback" would have been better than "You'll take it and you'll like it... Oh, stock's dropping, never mind." They listened to their wallets, not the fans, and telling me that they listened to the fans was the single greatest insult a corporation has ever dealt me.

Here's my take on XB1: they don't have much respect for us. Until they issue a statement saying they changed their plans because it wasn't financially sound, I'll always feel insulted by them. As though they don't think I can add parts of a problem together. They're putting the pieces back together from when e3 2013 shattered their image, but PlayStation send to always be a few steps ahead of them now (not to mention quite a bit of market share ahead). I'm interested in Scalebound, but I wouldn't buy an XB1 at this point even if it had Dark Souls 3 exclusively.

I went for a PS4 at launch due to the original direction of the Xbox One at E3 but then eventually bought a Xbox One in 2015 of which I sold my PS4 to fund the purchase. The reason I did this is I realised I was actually looking forward to Microsoft's E3 conference more than I did Sony's and I didn't even own a Xbox One at the time.

PlayStation has always been about the third party for me where as Microsoft has been about their first party, I also began to think about how poor the recent JRPG scene has become and thought well I'm not really missing anything from not owning a PS4. I since bought a Second PS4 and became a multi console owner again but that didn't last long as I sold it again. Will probably get another in the future but PS4 has had a really slow start this gen.

There really isn't much reason to own both a PS4 +X1 imo and even if people start warming to the prospect of the opposite console its still a really hard buy to own them both.

Nintendo + Sony all the way for me. Never really sided with anyone... ok I liked SNES vs Genesis, that was almost the same thing with all the too cool for school kids and their Madden while I was happy with my JRPG heaven known as SNES. I usually just followed the games. But Microsoft burned me hard 7th gen catering to the broheim military shooter and sports audience and in turn prompting publishers to only make those kinds of games, in a vicious spiral. I had gone 360 at the start because the PS3 launch was a complete loss and they showed promise with stuff like Dead Rising, Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, etc. on the way. Then it all went away for Gears of War 9, Halo 258, Call of Duty 304834583, and I was just done.

Then they pulled the same thing with XBO on TOP of the anti consumer moves and had a unanimously inferior box this time around, which made it too easy to stay away.

I've aligned myself 100% with Sony+Nintendo for 8th gen. Microsoft has shown that they STILL want an all digital anti ownership agenda (Halo 5 LCE with no physical game, but hey at least you get a steel book to put your used voucher in!!!). Best $250 I ever didn't have to spend.  And they have shown that all they care about STILL is the biggest target market of bro shooters and sports games (remember how much they hyped integrated NFL features and CATV passthrough?)

I have all 23 physical retail games on XBO that I can't get anywhere else. That is ALL since launch, a whopping 23 games. It would be 24 but Rise of the Tomb Raider is getting a PS4 release. Of those 23, 4 are Forza (5, 5 GOTY, Horizon 2, and 6) and 2 are Halo (MCC and 5) then you have Titanfall and a Gears remaster... 6 are GOTY versions of each other (Ryse, Forza 5, Dead Rising 3), Scream Ride and Zoo Tycoon and Disney Fantasia were 360 games ported over to pad the launch titles... see where I'm going with this?

Microsoft is a 3 trick pony: Halo, Gears, Forza is all they can do. Even their precious Call of Duty base they relied on that carried the 360 all 7th gen jumped ship because of their Nazi DRM attempt. They have Rare and now that all the original staff are gone they can't even make a good game that isn't oozing in testosterone and uses more than the colors olive green and brown.  They are forced to make Kinect Sports. So instead they release remakes; Rare Replay and Killer Instinct which was nothing more than an attempt to attract a couple Sony + Nintendo players and cash in on the rising nostalgia and retro craze and to brag that they have Rare and nobody else can have them.

There are 9 more physical release games coming out over the horizon, most don't even have release dates.

Well the Wii U was made for you.

Anyhow, I like games. I really like the games MS puts on their machines. So... I like Xbox. It doesn't really go beyond that for me.

I also like what Nintendo and Sony does, so I have their machines as well.

Personally, I don't have a problem with the Xbox One.  If Playstation did not exist, I'd go the PC + Xbox route.  On the other hand, I don't trust Microsoft as a whole and would rather not see them with the market lead.  They didn't change the first Xbox One concept because people didn't like it, they changed because they were going to get crushed in the market-place.  Had there been no PS4, we would have had to live with the Xbox One's first design.  Not that I'd trust Sony without competition, either, though, and I definitely do not want Nintendo to be my only option.

On my job, decisions are made by several people on a corporate level.  Sometimes, things go wrong and SOMEBODY has to be held accountable.  They tend to sacrifice somebody to appease the public. They can say "We identified the problem, the person responsible, and its been taken care of."

I kinda feel like that's what happened at M$. They fired one guy for decisions that probably had input from dozens and dozens of people.

This is the truth.  The original plan for the Xbox One was a corporate decision.  It was a big move that had to get support, and perhaps was even initialized, from the highest levels.  Mattrick did not do that on his own.  It might not have even been his idea.  Spencer was there, too, and we'll probably never know his exact level of input.  Likewise, the new direction was also a corporate decision, even if Spencer is at the forefront.  Honestly, I think it's inspired PR on Microsoft's part to make the new Xbox chief the figure-head for the change and to give him all credit, even if people higher up made the call.
