But you saying Halo and Gears are "story" oriented games is about as hilarious as the other guy saying Killzone multiplayer compares to Gears and Halo.

Halo...Gears... "story"... bwhaha.

I won't comment on Halo since I'm not too familiar with it, but Gears is definitely story driven game. Maybe you just can't see past them muscular alpha-males and horrifying monsters crawling under the ground :) Not every story has to affect you in real life, leave emotional scars or impress audience at Festival de Cannes to be good. For example,  I remember being afraid of monsters under my bed when I was a child and Gears of War reminds me of that.

I love a deep story that affects me, last one that touched me was Life is Strange and a book by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, but being able to only appreciate stories like that would make me.. ugh.. a hipster :P

I enjoyed the first Gears and the whole twist that YOU are the invading monster and not the other guys.

But it's not in the same ballpark as some of the other games I mentioned, hell it ain't even the same damn sport. Yes... stealing lines from Pulp Fiction lol.

My beef with gears is the first was pretty ground breaking and set some standards at a time when it seemed we would never see a co-op game ever again, and the first one was great.   But then 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 etc etc etc and they just wore it out and drug it through the mud and it became the poster child for "dudebro".

As far as story goes, all that can be said is it ... has "a" story I guess.  It's definately not saucer eyed jaw open full body numb shaking hands hairs standing on end revelations like some JRPGs (Xenogears cough) :D  When all is said and done, it's an arcade shooter first, with a surface story to justify why you should follow these waypoints and shoot stuff.

Halo does actually have a pretty wide canonical backstory and universe lore retconned in, but it's mostly lore and back story.  In the end, like Gears, it's a "nades and splosions and pwning n00bs" game first and the story potental is sidelined in favor of K/Ds and blowing stuff up.  A classic JRPG story would make Halo's story look like a Michael Bay movie.

What does "dudebro" mean? I see it used alot. I don't really see how a trilogy and spinoff that didn't please many wore it out, not to mention that original Gears is the least story driven of them. What was that twist you mentioned, I just played Ultimate Edition but don't recall that?

I agree it's not a story you describe, but I just wouldn't want every story to be like that. Sometimes you just want that Woody Allen movie, simple down-to-earth kind a stuff with some nice themes around it :)

edit. this is going offtopic :P

It's a generic term that describes the modern mainstream insecure 20 and 30-teen something male "gamer" who only associates himself with "cool" and "mature" games like football and military shooters.  The kind of person who, prior to video games becoming mainstream and socially acceptable, would have not been caught dead with say a NES due to being affraid of the stigma of being caught with a child's toy.  They are the reason so many games today have cover art depicting steroid injected men with goatees or assault rifles.  Activision and EA's bread and butter basically.

They are typically afraid of anything percieved as childish or colorful and only play and buy "serious" and "realistic" games like Call of Duty, Madden, Halo, Gears, Killzone, God of War, etc.

You can typically spot them in public in Gamestops preordering the latest Call of Duty, in their Raiders jackets and sports jerseys and smelling like AXE body spray, and pretending to talk like a thug about how dope the latest guns in COD look or how they once killed 3 people with 1 grenade.

Just before they waddle their Doritos and Mountain Dew diabetic asses back to their slammed and hellaflushed Infinitis with tacky rims.  They are completely oblivious to the fact that their 733t ride is actually more embarrasing than being seen in the Nintendo isle.

Oh it's been ages, but I seem to remember foreshadowing at the end of Gears 1 or 2 that humans were the invaders on Sera and the Locusts were the ones actually defending THEIR home from invasion of space aliens (eg: you) and excessive exploitation once humans started hoarding imulsion or something? Been ages though and I never played past 2.

Maybe I was just reading into it too much because it's the kind of twist I would enjoy.

The fact that I don't quite remember but I can recite almost every line of dialog from Xenogears and Final Fantasy IV only illustrates my stating that these AAA shooter games have weak stories that aren't memorable . :D

I used to only play sony consoles and I used to not even care about xbox. But then I saw the biggest piece of trash ever (the ps3) it did not interest me one bit, with the price it was at it gave me an awful taste in my mouth and also none of my friends were getting it either. So I got a Wii and I wasn't too happy with it. Don't get me wrong it liked it but not as much as my ps2 or ps1. So then I got a 360 and sold the wii. I was starting to really like it, I was actually liking it more than my ps2. But then a new generation came along and this one felt weird, I saw what the xbox one had to offer and what the ps4 had to offer, they both didn't really interest me for a while so I was even thinking of going to pc but I kept playing my 360. About 6 months after launch I tried the ps4 and I really liked how it was not like the ps3 but I didn't really have a game that interested me other than TLOU. So then E3 2015 came along and I started to look at what they had to offer and Microsoft's E3 got me wanting to get a xbone so I got one for fallout, halo and now quantum break. I also look forwards to getting a ps4 now for no mans sky.

My take on the One is that it was dog shit at the beginning but spencer has really changed how I look at it. I do really like the console like my 360 but I wish it had more power.

Lets agree to disagree, we just have different perspectives.

Killzone multiplayer is mediocre and the online population has always been poor.

I never struggle to find a online match. I also have to disagree with you, the multilayer is solid but that's opinions for you.

Well if not struggling to find a match is the barometer we are using to determine success, well then I guess its online population is doing great. People generally haven't been that open minded when discussing Titanfall's population.

I'm not sure why what you mean then! Should of I said it's not hard to find a populated match to make it more clear? Or do you mean something else by "the online population has always been poor."

There was a time you were guilty of doing that with the Xbox One. Not saying everything else sucked, but you downplayed it.

That time hasn't yet passed.

Well, this is a non conclusion...

Unfortunately the policies led to the downplay of the hardware specs and this cannot be solved... Talking platform policies, none of the ms crowd admitted they were in the wrong in any way, they just said they weren't popular with the customers, so they seem to think it was in fact all good and should really have been accepted by the buyers....

Anyway, their platform still has a bloated interface, slow installs, and unstable controller connection :-/ as well as being the weaker console ( ps4 barely makes it and it's the most powerful console at the moment)

Want me to spoil Gears 3 for you?

Turns out the Locusts were being attacked by their own. The oil (aka immulsion) was actually a micro organism making them crazy like zombies. It eventually spreads into humans. Co character Dom sacrifices himself to help the others escape a dire situation. Eventually, to stop the spread of the parasite, the decision is made to commit genocide on the Locusts.  Marcus mourns his fallen brother.  I left out a lot but that's the gist.

Weak story, I know.  But I loved it. There's only three main Gears games and a prequel, btw.
