I'd mourn Nintendo because if they bet everything on it they'd go out of business. VR is too expensive for the average consumer and the technology isn't fully there to get an experience satisfying enough that you'd go out of your way to utilize it for every game you play. The only people who are really hyped about it right now are vocal hobbyists with a lot of disposable income. Also, Hololens. I'd rather Nintendo invest in something like that than in VR.

what about... hololens? VR is supposedly too expensive and "not there yet" - which cant be farther from the truth - however the tech that has literally no gamez let alone proven game concepts except for an infomercial and cheesy presentations should offer more potential? also, there isnt even a consumer version in sight, let alone a affordable one.

It sounds like backpedaling on my part but I meant to say that if Nintendo had to pick an expensive headgear technology, I think something like hololens would be the preferred choice for Nintendo because it tries to interact with real life rather than attempt to replace it. Nintendo's always been guarded about adapting technology that didn't mesh with their kid/family interaction image. They emphasize local play, tried their best to delay online multiplayer for as long as possible and criticized it for creating an isolating gaming experience. Same thing with VR; I remember some execs from Nintendo critizing VR as a piece of technology people would just wear, hide off in a corner and interact with themselves. I believe something like hololens, which would allow Nintendo to maybe revive local multiplayer and allow more live person-to-person interaction, would be more up their alley. Plus, most of Nintendo's games don't need VR and Nintendo isn't going to adapt something that they don't need or want unless the market absolutely forces them to.
That being said, I hope Nintendo doesn't adapt either anytime soon because it's still not close to being cost effective and Nintendo is not known for adapting cutting-edge techology. The Oculus Rift costs 600 bucks for the headset alone. I don't think the mass public will buy a Nintendo VR headset for 400-600 bucks on top of buying a Nintendo console strong enough to run games for it -- especially when the economy is due for another recession.
