Forums - Gaming Discussion - Switched my console of choice for the first time in 18 years - Part 3

Hello all (I apologize in advance for the longer OP)

First off, part 1 of this thread was created in June 2014. It discussed how I started gaming with the Sega Genesis but then moved on to the N64. Every since then, I've owned nothing but Nintendo systems & became a Nintendo fanboy. I would even defend them with a passion on this very site beginning in 2009. The original thread stated that I bought a Wii U in January 2014 but had sold it by June in order to 'switch' to the PS4. (I was unhappy with how the Wii U was turning out)

Part 2 was created in January 2015. The intent was to see how I had felt about my decision and if I had any regrets. Turns out, I had gotten another Wii U anyway in December 2014 as a Christmas gift. This made me a multi-console owner for the first time during a gen. In short, I was happy with both consoles and had no intention to sell either. I also claimed to now be a PS fan and would likely continue to purchase future PS systems. I had planned to use both systems roughly equally.

Now that a full year has passed, and I said I would do another update, has anything changed? Basically, the PS4 & Wii U are two very different systems that have been used for different things.

PS4: The PS4 has become the go to device for single player gaming. This is in part because I actually haven't purchased any single player Wii U games since I got the new Wii U other then Wii Fit U. (I played Zombi U, 3D World, and Pikmin 3 but sold them with the original Wii U) I have played & beaten InFamous SS, TLOU R, Until Dawn, Resident Evil HD R, and Tearaway Unfolded. I also own Black Ops 3, and Guilty Gear Xrd Sign. (My bro also plays Fallout 4 but I don't play it) (RE0 and The Evil Within will both be on this list soon) Until Dawn & Tearaway Unfolded are both excellent 9+ games to go along with The Last Of Us which I talked about surprising me with its quality last time. The PS4 is also the Netflix / movie player in the house which certainly comes in handy. This makes it more than a gaming system which is a plus.

Wii U: The Wii U is a pure gaming system. I use it only to play games with my family members / friends / online. When I'm bored, and alone, PS4 is the chosen one in most cases. With that said, the Wii U has finally grown on me and is a lot of fun. Playing games like Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Ultra Smash, Mario Party, and amiibo Festival with multiple people locally is always entertaining. Beating Yoshi was pretty fun with my bro but it did have some issues. I'm currently playing Tropical Freeze and that's been great so far! (Might give opinion on both when done) Lastly, Splatoon is a great new addition to the Nintendo stable.

All in all both have been great systems that compliment each other well. Which do I use more as of now? The Wii U. Why? Well, it simply fits better with what I currently want out of a game system. Recently, I've been finding that gaming is more of a social thing for me. I haven't felt motivated to sit down and play a game by myself. I have also concluded that Nintendo consoles do offer something different in local play. While this can be had on PS4 / XB, it isn't a common thing. Both consoles have a place tho.

Games I'm considering on PS4 / Wii U: Street Fighter 5, Ratchet & Clank, The Last Guardian, Dreams, Detroit, Zelda Twilight Princess, Pokken, StarFox. I'm also hesitant but curious about PSVR.

My thoughts on future Nintendo consoles looks good. I'm excited to see what's in store with the NX. Things change but I'm thinking of preordering if it is in fact a home console. It will be my first system I get at launch. I just know I'll probably get it eventually anyway and think it would be cool to have it from the start instead of jumping in later like I did with Wii U in order to get more out of it. As for future PS consoles? It depends how the rest of this gen goes. I see potential and fun to be had in all 3 console brands and unlike Nintendo, Sony doesn't have its own lane (for me). PS & XB are similar and try to do similar so it all depends on how things go. To put it a different way, I believe I'm a Nintendo fan but only a fan of the PS4, not PS as a whole...yet.

Note: I only did this thread because I was told you guys wanted updates. If you guys no longer care, feel free to tell me Also, please let me know what you think of my opinions and give your own about how this gen has gone for you so far.

I see neither of you read the OP. I know it's long but you could've just not posted if you didn't feel like reading it

I thought I did. You went from Nintendo to mainly Sony and then added some Wii U?

Eh, let's go with that. Not the point of the thread but sure

Post says joined site in 2009, account says 2016. hmm, something suspicious is going on here...

Good to hear you're enjoying both though. Too bad you've never been a multi-console owner before, it really is the best way to game :)

You figured me out

Thanks tho. It really is the best way to get more out of gaming.

Interesting write-up. Would you say that adding Playstation has changed or added to your taste in games or is it about the same as before? How much of a jump in third-party interest have you experienced? Has you opinion of third-party games altered from when you were a Nintendo-only gamer?

Thanks

Adding PlayStation has made me more open minded. When I was Nintendo-only, I believed strongly that gameplay was just about the only thing that mattered in a game. Since playing games such as 'The Last Of Us' & 'Until Dawn', I've realized that a bigger focus on emotion, and character development can very much enhance the game if done well. 3rd party importance has stayed the same for the most part. As you can see from my list concerning future games I'm considering, only 3rd party release on either system is Street Fighter 5. On the other hand, I'm interested in many upcoming Sony published games. Maybe this will change in the future

Now go get yourself a steam account and be a Multi-platform gaming god.

lol, my thoughts exactly.

Go get a PC already, Rain! xD

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I don't even own a PC yet so this is impossible. I'm thinking about looking into getting one in a few months maybe.

I'm not big into RPG's simply because of how long they are. I don't think they would keep my interest for the amount of hours it requires to beat them. I forgot about Persona tho, maybe I'll check it out. (or try out FF on PS Now or something)

Interesting. I think it is great that you are expanding your Horizons (pun intended). IMO nothing but good things can happen when you expose yourself to diversity.

Interesting point you bring up about Nintendo being the social gaming platform. I, for the most part, find that to be true. Whereas XB and PS have been focusing on online social gaming (with the exception of a few games), it seems Nintendo is the brand that always keeps couch co-op in mind. Halo 5 losing splitscreen was of no consequence to me but I imagine a few people were sad that they could not play couch co-op like they had in previous iterations. Neither system has really had a racing game or fighting game that shines on game night as much as Nintendo has. Of all the games I have on PS4, Rocket League is the only one with splitscreen. I have enjoyed playing online with friends in Destiny/Rocket League/TLOU R etc, but I don't think couch co-op will ever be replaced. This is the one glaring fault with owning a Sony or Microsoft console IMO, with the exception of a select few games. They just never seem to be executed as well or catch on as much. (minecraft maybe?)
*Other uses for my PS4 include Spotify and Netflix. Great single player but game night pretty much will always be on the Game Cube in the living room*

I'm glad you can have the best of both worlds. PS4 has always been the home of narrative IMHO so you made the right choice there (examples include Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, The Last of Us, Uncharted etc; narrative is the PS strong suit). Nintendo will always be the home of face-to-face social gaming.

Then again maybe I agree with you so much because I've always been PS+Nintendo. Need any game recommendations, or games to look out for?
