Forums - General Discussion - 62 richest people has as much money as poorest 3.5 billion humans

I find it quite disappointing when we see the state of our world.

A pessimist will predict our future as a wasteland filled without any sign of life. An optimist predicts our future as a peachy world where we use removable energy and fix everything bad.

Though, my biggest fear is that nothing will change- the rich will get richer, the poor will get poorer. Apparently, over the last 5 years, the richest people in the world have earned over 500 billion. Meanwhile, the bottom 50% of the world has lost approximately a trillion dollars.

Here's a quote from an article on CNN:

"The income gap between the richest and poorest is also growing. The poorest 20% of the world -- who live below the extreme poverty line, living on less than $1.90 a day -- barely saw their incomes budge between 1988 and 2011, while the most prosperous 10% enjoyed a 46% jump."

I'm not a genius when it comes to economics, but I know that this isn't acceptable. It's extremely ridiculous, especially since so many rich people are selfish, greedy, and careless.

I know many rich people that don't deserve the money they earn- good examples? Sports players and models. I never understood why they get to gain millions while people working to death get a few dollars a day.

Sure, a lot of people will say "suck it up" or such. Though, I don't see how anyone could ignore such an issue. Most of us complain about little things such as a tomato in your sandwich, or maybe you're stuck with a test. Just kills me when people with a good life complain over nonsense. Makes it worse when the place you're from is filled with poor people(from Jerusalem. The poor people I see there always makes me feel guilty).

It would be nice if there was some balance between the rich and poor. 62 people shouldn't have the same amount of money as 3.5 billion humans. It would also be nice if a lot of people appreciated the life they have.

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

You can't compare the poor in 3rd world countries to the wealthiest people in the world. The ones who have money are in better areas of the world to make that money. If you attack them you could attack the poorest that live in America because there all rich as hell compared to the poorest in the world. Bill gates could never made his billions if he was born in there countries.

It's absolutely fair IMO ...

Most of the wealth is earned, not inherited and saying otherwise is denying ...

Doesnt matter if they deserve the money they have, same as it doesnt matter if poor people deserve being poor. Economics doesnt have moral standings.

Muda Muda Muda Muda Muda Muda!!!!

With sports players in particular, when my dad was a kid, he used to go to a lot of baseball games and he said in the off season, those famous ball players might be a co-worker at your job because they had to get a job in the off season. They only started making actual money when television and advertising got involved with the sports. The sports leagues were getting money from this as well as the team owners. The managers, coaches, refs, and the players wanted their share too.

To be honest, while I think getting paid millions of dollars to play a kid's game is stupid, I think it actually is fair. Think about it, the athletes play the games. They're the reason the owners are getting rich. Don't they deserve some of that money as well? Also, if you want to be brutally honest, it is actually the fault of the average consumer that these people make so much. Using the sports stars as an example again, if the fans would not go to the games, not buy the merchandise, not watch the games on TV that justify airing the Coke advertisements, then these sports stars wouldn't be making all that money.

Another sad truth is that entertainment is more valuable than just about anything today. It is where the money is invested and spent. And it is the fault of everyone that it is that way.

Eh, sports stars are paid based on how much revenue they generate. It is fair. If the consumers didn't buy the tickets and merchandise, they wouldn't make that kind of money. They earn it.

It is indicative of a disgusting economic and political system.

Minor issue; don't think this belongs in gaming discussion, but whatever.

I know many rich people that don't deserve the money they earn- good examples? Sports players and models. I never understood why they get to gain millions while people working to death get a few dollars a day.

To put it simply; they get it because of supply and demand. People really want to watch sports; particularly those played at a high level. However, there are only so many teams any one nation can support. In other words, the supply of extremely high quality players is limited by the size of teams. Thus, those that are good enough to play at a professional level will get paid a lot to do so.

Meanwhile, sweatshop workers barely make enough to live on because there's thousands of other people who will make clothes for pennies a day. The demand for clothes is certainly high, but the supply of potential clothesmakers is even greater.

I don't think anyone will argue that it isn't a problem, but more along the lines of it's a nigh on impossible problem to solve without giving majority world nations time to develop, and perhaps some economic advice along the way so they don't spend themselves into incredible debt like Zambia has (very much aware of the hypocriscy coming from an American). If you, say, for instance, raise minimum wages in the country these workers are living in, the jobs will be taken elsewhere; corporations almost always seek to maximize profit. People will then turn to whatever they can to keep themselves fed; be it prostitution, selling drugs, or other even worse ventures.

It would be nice if there was some balance between the rich and poor. 62 people shouldn't have the same amount of money as 3.5 billion humans. It would also be nice if a lot of people appreciated the life they have.

I'm not entirely sure I buy the "your life could be worse, so appreciate it more" argument, because yes, things could always be worse. Doesn't mean we shouldn't try to fix the things that are broken in the first world, even if they're relatively minor problems compared to underdeveloped nations. Simply ranting rarely helps, but having open discussions about things that are broken or working poorly can be extremely beneficial, and oftentimes leaves both parties better informed.

(Though yes, I agree, getting upset about a tomato on a hamburger isn't useful)

That doesn't necessarily make it fair, particularly when someone starts off in a much better position to earn far more money than most others. Fair assumes everyone is on a level playing field, with the same opportunities, and that's certainly not the case.

It's just shocking! And I'm more of an pessimist when it comes to these types of things... Especially when you know you can see all the problems but can't help as much as you would like. And the very wealthy people can really make a bigger difference if they really wanted.
