Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nikkei: FFXV and DQXI expected to sell over a million each in Japan

The February issue of the monthly magazine Nikkei Tredy, part of the editorial galaxy of the prominent newspaper Nikkei Shinbun, had an article on the Japanese video game market.

According to the article, smartphone games have pushed home consoles somewhat out of the limelight in the past few years in Japan, but despite that both Final Fantasy XV and Dragon Quest XI are expected to sell more than a million units each on the local market, also contributing to pushing console sales.

Interestingly, the magazine also mentions that Final Fantasy XV’s unconventional battle system is likely to split the opinion of the traditional fans of the series, but will appeal to lovers of action games.

shouldnt it be higher than that?

Sony needs to sell more PS4s in japan.

Both games should comfortably pass that milestone.

Dragon Quest XI will, especially being on both 3DS and PS4. But FFXV won't reach it confortably, that's for sure. PS4 will be at 3m or something by the time it launches, and considering FF sales are extremely frontloaded on the first week, it would have to do at the very least 600k FW to reach it. But I'm confident it will!

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

I anticipate DQXI breaking one million on the PS4 and the 3DS. Japan is still big on Dragon Quest, and I'm sure they've been aching for another offline, non-remake. The 3DS version appeals to the highly mobile gaming culture of Japan as a whole, while the PS4 version will be big, beautiful, and lapped up by tons of PS4 owners. Odds are, it will be a system seller in Japan.

As for FFXV, I can see it going either way. The development process has been careful and more transparent than many others, which may aid in trust in the final product. That said, FFXIII failed to break two million, and the sequels just saw further declining sales. The remasters have hardly been heavy hitters, and trust may be waning in the series as it continues to grow in western prominence, but decline in Japan.

That aside, will FFXV break one million? Definitely. I think the real question is whether or not it will break two million, and unless FFXV is very good, I don't think it will.

According to Media Create Final Fantasy XIII (the last mainline Final Fantasy game) sold 1,501,964 on a 4,276,480 PS3 install base. That's a 35% attach rate for the first week. If the PS4 is at 3 million units and FFXV sells at a similar attach rate, it would sell approximately 1.05 million FW. I don't think one million should be hard at all for FFXV. I could be wrong obviously, but I wouldn't be surprised if it breaks one million in its first week.

I hope both of these go over 2m.
And kinda think they could... I think they are expecting more than 1m sold in japan for both of them.

1mil is easy, especially when it'll be done first week.

Yes, it should be close, but I don't think it will be easy, especially cause most sales are on the first week. Also, FFXIII had an extremely crazy hype before launch, and because of that I can't see XV reaching the same attach rate on FW. But let's hope for the best... the game looks like it derserves all the sales it can get.

Yeah 1m should be done in the first week for both of these.

Look how long its been since the last FF13... its been ages, I bet theres plenty of japanese players out there hungry for a new FF game.
