Forums - General Discussion - Walmart To Close Over 200 Stores, Lay Off About 10,000 U.S. Workers

This is what happens when you want 15 bucks for a simple job.

This is also what happens when Walmart's owners are nothing but selfish assholes.

The owners deserve the profit loss. I despise Walmart, and never go there. My father hates it more, as he is a business owner, and hates big companies such as Walmart that mistreat their clients.

The workers don't deserve this though. Already hard enough dealing with the idiots who shop there

But...they don't make $15 an hour...

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

It's primarily due to them closing down WalMart Express, a failed concept that they tried. Supermarkets do this all the time, though they rarely let the failure get this big.

Aside from that, supermarkets shut and open new stores every year. WalMart announced that they're closing 289 stores this year.... but they opened over 400 last year. And will probably open in the hundreds again this year.

EDIT: Of the 289 stores closing, about 150 are from the USA (again, mostly WalMart Express). Looks like Brazil got hit hard too.

It's only Walmart Express from what I read in another article. They also said they're going to try moving most of the workers affected to other locations.

Walmart is raising their minimum wage to $10 per hour starting February, so it's most likely related to that.

This has nothing to do with wages and everything to do with there being a oversaturation of Wal-Mart stores across the country.  Plus the stores they are closing are the smaller ones which have a lot more competion from other supermarkets and dollar stores.

Most walmart employees are on food stamp anyway and they get more out of it then their slave wages at walmart. I hope the smart one use the experience they got at walmart to get a better paying job so they can get out of food stamp. Trump 2016 for a better Canada

I am a hourly manager at walmart and on food stamps.

I have a hard time understanding USA economics.

How can you have a full time job and earn so little that you are approved for food stamps and still you buy ALL new games?

Small format Walmart going the way of the dodo. Likely sticking with the supercenter montrosities for the immediate future.

Kids. The more you got, the higher wage you can earn and still be eligible.

iirc from his posts, spurge seems to have a lot of kids in his life, his own, and his new partner's.

That's because you're thinking about in terms of economics and the salary a person takes home and that's why it's hard to understand.

Also thinking about a government program by its name is a problem which would confuse someone as well.  For instance you might say why can someone work full time at a job and get disability?

l <---- Do you mean this glitch Gribble?  If not, I'll keep looking.

So...you think Walmart is closing its Express stores because someone running from President has talked about wanting to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour?

Another thing I'd like to point out regarding retail wages. As someone who works in a major retail store, our wages went up considerably last year because stores are having such a hard time finding people. The economy is good, nobody is looking to work at places that pay less than $9-$10 an hour.
