Forums - Sports Discussion - Champions League to be axed by a top 20 European Elite Club Super League?

Two of the world’s most influential clubs have called for a European Super League to replace the Champions League.

Juventus and Bayern Munich believe the continent’s elite clubs will break away to form a competition that exists outside domestic structures.

If such plans make progress, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and the Manchester clubs could expect to be invited.

Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rumenigge said: “In the future, I can see a tournament consisting of 20 teams from Italy, England, Spain, Germany and France.

“It is an idea born some time ago. I see that in the top five leagues in Europe, the big teams are always getting stronger and stronger.

“A super league outside of the Champions League is being born. It will either be led by UEFA or by a separate entity, because there is a limit to how much money can be made.”

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli echoed Rumenigge’s words, arguing that top football clubs should be able to make as much money as their counterparts in American sports.

He said: “The Champions League is worth €1.5 billion (£1.1bn) in TV rights against nearly €7bn (£5.2bn) that the Super Bowl is worth, despite market research telling us that there are 1.6 billion football fans and only 150 million NFL fans.

“This should make us review the untapped potential within the current format of football. We operate in an industry that is heavily regulated.

This is actually kinda cool, can you imagine Bayern, Barca and RM playing regularly without the hazards of being eliminated by an upset during the first rounds of knockout stages?

They want to make sure to have a team from a 2nd Division in the field. A real underdog.

I thought this was about sports at first. Turns out all they have in mind is more money. Well, whatever, do what you want.

Is there a breakdown of advertisement time versus sport time? NFL seems to have a ton of ads.

Terrible idea. I already loathe how the champions league with all its money has turned modern European football into a rather predictable affair with an increasingly small pool of teams that can actually achieve anything. Also there's all the club owners investing ridiculous amounts of money into teams and rich clubs attracting underaged players from abroad before they are allowed to sign a contract.

Money has mostly ruined European football for countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, Scotland, Serbia, Greece and some others, who used to be be succesfull (at least to some degree).

Yeah, an even smaller elite, with fewer upsets and even more unfair competition is exactly what we need...

That's a stupid thing to look at anyway. How many Tottenham fans around the world do you really think cares, really, about the Champions League when they aren't in it? Do you think China cares about who is the champions of Europe? Hardly.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31386483 - this is just the UK rights. The rest of the world pay another 3 billion between them.

£8billion just for premier league.

Hmm, pie.

Hmmm so it's nothing to do with the love of football and competition, it's just they think they can earn more money for themselves. Oh well.
