Forums - Nintendo Discussion - I think the 3ds successor should use a foldable screen

Would you like Nintendo to use a big foldable screen on their next handheld?

Yes 16 44.44%

No 20 55.56%

Total:36

I've seen this video a few years ago and thought it would be perfect for a future nintendo handheld. It would allow a big screen while keeping the DS gameplay possibilities, BC with 3ds games and the clamshell design that makes the console more portable. Considering how old the video is, the technology is certainly afordable for a 2016 handheld and advanced enough that we won't even see the screen division. Your thoughts?

edit: Another benefit would be when using the ds/3ds dual screen gameplay, it won't be necessary to have a 50-50 screen division. The top screen could go 60-70% of the total space and vice versa.

Do you mean like that patent Nintendo filed a while back for a free-form screen?

depends on what price nintendo can get them for... if its not much more expensive than other solutions then yes.

I voted no, because I think it ll be to expensive.

The video is very old (2009), should be afordable by now. It's also easier for nintendo to get better manufacturing deals for a single screen at high resolution instead of two weird resolution ones. They even aknowledged that with the 2ds single screen.

@Thunderbird
If thats really true, then yes they def. should go that route.

I want this on my XDS simply because cutscenes that work with both screens are always a bit delayed in the transition...

I think that fold mark in the middle of the screen would'nt be very appealing.

I don't know why you think it will be affordable? yet the video states its a prototype. Smart Phones are yet to have this technology.

Ehh, depending on what they do for their next portable, I'd be fine with a foldable screen, but I would also be down to something more traditional.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

I don't think so... we don't see any folding screens even now, meaning that they are still too expensive to sell at a cheap price (~$200)

Plus, this would be a nightmare in terms of durability and repair costs for both Nintendo and the consumer..
