Forums - Gaming Discussion - Females in Gaming

To save problems, more companies should make games with cartoon like characters. Male or female, no one cares what gender they are if they are a giant  talking rat.

Hmm, pie.

I dunno, I feel like if Splinter was female there would've been backlash over his/her ability to teach the turtles.

Alright so reading through the comments, i realized i am alone on this and although i can't symphasize with you guys, i will try to change that sexiest attitude of mine and while doing that also try to expand my gaming experience by trying games out with a female protagonist which i refused to play before.
I already have my eyes on a game and that is Horizon for the PS4, but again i will TRY.
Still, thanks for all the replies and thoughts you guys shared with me on this topic that concerned me.

You are not alone, I feel the same as you. I have a hard time identifying with female characters as well, and it really takes from the experience for me. Nothing wrong with it, just not for me. Still bumbed about Horizon Zero Dawn (yes i am still buying it, but it automatically loses points on my enjoyment meter).

I already went over this in another thread and don't feel like getting bombarded with scenarios and questions that I have a simple answer for but since people don't agree they just keep asking why, even though I made it very clear, so Im just gonna leave it at that. (Bet i still get bombarded)

Just know you are not alone brother.

I noticed an annoying trend lately, a lot of game sequels or new ip's have female chracters as protagonists. Now this isn't something bad on itself but i have the feeling that a lot of developer force them selves to make the protagonist of their game a female just to be politically correct, i mean i have nothing against female characters being playable but in a industry mostly dominated by male people (yes there are a lot more males playing video games than females, don't kid yourself) to shift it's focus soley on female protagonist just to be politically correct or to avoid stereotypes in video games, just isn't right.
I mean i myself don't like it to play as a female character, that's mostly because i like to identify myself with my hero and i am really not so hot about the idea to spend 60$ to play as a female. And i do get a lot of flack for this.
Long story short, with the rise of feminist in our (western) society, i fell like their influence is reaching the gaming industry and i do not like it, not at all. Especially considering females tend to bash video games more than males.
So what's your thought on this? Did you notice that trend too? Would it annoy you to see your favorite franshise change it's protagonist to a female? And most importantly...does my view on this make me a misagonist?

So, you're telling me, that there is no way you can identify with females? Seriously. Can you only play as a male of your race and age? I mean, I don't really know what else to say to that. We're all human, and it really makes little difference to me. Let's look at every major release of 2015, of them, I can think of 4 games that will feature female protagonists. Horizon, Nier: automata, Mirror's edge, and dead or alive. And dead or alive is about as mysognistic as a game can get. So your idea that games are moving to solely female protagonists is rediculous. Yeah, there are more than there used to be because there's more than one.

And the idea that gamers the vast majority of "real" gamers are men at this point is a lie. Most things point females making up 30-40% of the market. And, of the people I know that own ps4s, are large number are females, probably close to 50/50. You're perception of gaming demographics is just wrong. If it shifted to all female protagonists, yes, I would be annoyed, but the trend is so far away from that it's rediculous.

Well in my case, I am a male and like to portray my own gender.  I have no desire to portray myself as a female.  Nothing wrong with it, just doesn't work for me.

It really is that simple...

I never mind female leads. I do mind when they're forced or pretty much a power and/or sexual fantasy of the developer.

Pixel Art can be fun.

I just don't understand your logic at all. So, females are just a completely foreign concept to you? You're not "identifying as a female" the character you're controlling in a game is female.

I notice your profile is Auron from FFX. Did you only use the male characters becuase you didn't want to identify as a female?

you know what... I want a female, vegan, lesbian, black, hairy feminist and activist Link on the next legend of zelda
