in bloodboren and splatoon you have a CHIOCE if you want to play a male or female which i am all for. Plus splatoon had a female on its cover so...

Any time you have something shoehorned in to appeal to a specific audience it is noticeable. Most games these days with female leads or strong female characters appear to be designed that way from a creative, not political, perspective.

As far as character creation games go, I usually create a female. If the game has multiple progressions (Mass Effect as an example) I make one of each. This way I know when I am on my male character it is the evil/dark play through and if I am on my female character it is the good/light play through.

I'd love to play a game where the main character is a female and plays the role of a good housewife. Does chores in the house. Such as cleaning, laundry, cooking, changing baby diapers, taking the kids to school, bringing her husband beer while he watches TV like a lazy bum. While also managing mood swings during menstrual cycles. We can call the game "The Good Housewife"

As far as less female lead characters in games, fuck that!!! I always play female characters and prioritize the order that I play games with that into consideration. Uncharted is way down on my list. The female body is a work of art. Moar!!!

There's still The Order: 1886 then.

We should have hermaphrodite protagonists so that everyone is happy.

Games with character creators should have this option when choosing gender!

I don't see how having characters that aren't white males means politically correct.

Personally I find many game characters from western developers to be boring from a character design perspective. I enjoy many of these games, but I wouldn't mind some more creativity.

I think this stems from the idea of people wanting to feel they are the character as opposed to playing the character. The above designs cater to the majority, making them largely feel bland. Yes, some have amazing character and stories, but at first glance nothing pops out at me here. I like my characters to have, well, character.

I'm getting a confused message here, though. You're saying only flamboyant characters can have character?

I'm saying there is character and character design.  Character design is memorable or iconic.  Mario is a great character design due to color balance and simplicity making him "pop".

When I see a character I make a snap judgment based on character design.  If they look bland then I am not drawn to them.  I was saying that once you play the game it is possible for them to show greater depth, but on the surface they all blend together making them largely forgettable.

Yep, a game that was announced in 2013, and i am talking about a trend LATELY. Plus i listed a lot more new ips with female protagonists which were announced in 2015.

I really don't care what gender I play, in some cases I prefer females leads, I'm glad that Horizon zero dawn is going to be a female protagonist. In assassins creed syndicate I much preferred the female character to the male one.
When I play beat em ups I.E street fighter, mortal kombat, my favourite fighters are both female.
I massively preffered bayonetta to Kratos, or Dante, (different games I know, but they're the closest comparisons)
However in mass effect when I had the choice of female or male I chose male as it seemed the better suited choice, and in tales of games, where the protagonist are male but you do have the choice control a diff character I always stick with the main male. So it doesn't really bother me.
