Forums - Movies & TV - 2015 is the 3rd lowest movie theatre attendance in the past 20 years in the US

The releases of movies like Star Wars, The Avengers and Jurassic World managed prevent a 3rd year of YoY decrease but it still did not bring in numbers similar to the late 90s/early 2000s. For example, 15% less people went to the cinema than in 2002 and that's despite a 12% increase in the US population.

I think the cinema experience in the US will continue to dwindle unless we have several extremely popular franchises releases every year.

I don't know about the US, but at least in Spain the cinema is horribly expensive. Without any special discount, a ticked could cost 7-8€, imagine the cost for a family of four to go see a film together. No wonder movie piracy is all the rage.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

This confuses me. Last time I checked every big name movie was passing up the billion dollar mark like it was always that way or something. I figured that people were going to the movies alot more nowadays.

Well domestically ticket sales where up 5.2% in 2015 over 2014. But unless a lot of movies over perform I can tickets sales easily being down this year again.

No shit sherlock. A ticket costs 12 € around here today - 15 € if it's 3D and they seem to show every goddamn movie in 3D these days. God, I hate 3D. But that's another story. On top of that, they want an additional 3 € if a movie has "overlength", meaning it is longer than 2 hours. So if you wanna watch a 3D movie with more than two hours, that will set you back a whopping 18 €. It's no cheaper for children either. So if you wanna watch a movie with your wife and two children, that would be 72 € for just one evening, not counting snacks and drinks. You know, the 9.99 € for Netflix a month seems like the better option.

When I was a Kid, a movie ticket cost 6 DM, which is roundabout 3 € (!). It just became too expensive.

Ticket prices are still pretty cheap in the US compared to Germany the average ticket price is currently $8.61 but there are a lot of places where you can get a ticket cheaper than that.  Plus when you go before 6 P.M. tickets are cheaper and on top of all that there are discount theaters that show movies that are close to the end of their theatrical run for about $2.

Costs £13-14 per adult for a 3D movie ticket and this is why I only do daytime viewings for less price and a 2D viewing but even then I hardly bother with the cinema these days when I could just wait and grab the cheap BR.

Cinemas won't be a thing within another decade or two with the way technology has been progressing. We've also seen Cinemas trying to earn more money by throwing gimmicks like 3D into the mix and we've also got some trying for 4D which will no doubt ramp up the prices, basically they are killing themselves a lot faster than they think,

Step right up come on in, feel the buzz in your veins, I'm like an chemical electrical right into your brain and I'm the one who killed the Radio, soon you'll all see

So pay up motherfuckers you belong to "V"

thats because everything that releases now days is generic and most likely stupid super hero movie. or a reboot to an old franchise.

when was the last time we got a new blockbuster that was actually fresh and new from hollywood?

without comic book nerds who cobble up everything that marvel and DC throw at them, hollywood would collapse.

The average home entertainment also has become much better since the 1990s / early 2000s (bigger TVs with higher resolution and better sound, better TV program (Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, many HBO series...).

Thanks to TV seasons on DVD/Blu-ray and streaming services the story arcs of these TV productions could get more complex: less worries that people lose interest in the series because they missed a few episodes and can't follow the story anymore. You can watch your favorite movies and tv series when YOU want, you don't have to keep in mind tv time slots anymore if you plan your dates.

So many people have less reasons to go to the cinema... It's not a much better experience than watching movies an tv series at home anymore.

Nevertheless both US and global box office revenues set new records in 2015, so I'm not worried about the movie industry.
