Why not? Nintendo has used a second screen that doubles as a touchscreen on three of their devices now, and a stylus is the most precise way to use the touchscreen.

Well I never personnally ever use the touch screen or stylus.Dont buy games that use them either.

+1.

I hate touch screen stuff and the stylus.... it feels like I might as well just be playing some mobile game on my phone or tablet then.

If you have a handheld with physical buttons.... use them! Its why people buy a handheld and not a tablet to game on.

I don't see how Nintendo can possibly support two separate platforms going forward anyway.

Like most of you guys spent the better part of the last 5 years complaining that you're not getting enough 3DS or Wii U games (alternating) and now ... Nintendo is somehow magically going to be able to support a portable that's a good deal more powerful than a 3DS (even a Vita-class portable is considerably beyond a 3DS) and a console that's north of the Wii U, when they can't even support the 3DS/Wii U as is?

And don't give me the "they'll just hire more people". No they won't. Nintendo values being a small, tight-knit company and their company culture, that's part of the reason why they can keep the quality of their product. Beyond that the expansion they would need would be massive, like doubling of their work force effectively to be able to support both. Never going to happen.

Any idea that doesn't allow for sharing of a library is a non-starter just on logistics. It doesn't matter what spec your hardware is if you can't even support it.

Like this Vita-3DS system ... ok so Nintendo launches it, but it would require it's own new Mario. And you probably want Splatoon on it too. Oh Mario Kart 9 has to be on it. That means the poor console wouldn't have these IP early in its life cycle. This would be a disaster all around. And Nintendo can't allow the portable to fail, so they'd have to stop and support it tremdously first and formost (like the 3DS), except it would require more resources than the 3DS.

Like is EAD Tokyo supposed to make a Mario Galaxy 3 for "NX Portable" and then turn around in a year and also deliver Mario Galaxy 4 for "NX Console"?C'mon guys. This is never going to work.

Good luck making games for your PS4-class console. Sony would not be able to pull this off either, it's not just a Nintendo problem. It's not realistic to ask any company to support two fairly high-end platforms in today's day and age.

Difference is, Nintendo can be smart and not waste their handheld's power on gimmicks.

No one is asking Nintendo to have an insanely powerful handheld and console.

It's 2016, and the power of mobile devices is tremendous. I understood the DS's weak hardware. However, Nintendo should not struggle to make a device with at least a 540p screen, 1 GB of RAM, and a dual/quad core processor that is along the lines of a Snapdragon 400/600.

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

Yep. It doesn't need to be 3D, or backward compatible with 3DS or have a dual screen. It can be a good system without those features if the hardware is well balanced and with a good library.

If your system can't competently run modern third party games at reasonable equity with other consoles of the day -- then it's gimped.

Imagine the Super NES couldn't run games like Street Fighter 2 or Final Fantasy VI because the chipset was just a moderate upgrade on the NES.

But SFII on SNES was gimped from the original game.

Only in the same sense that AAA PS4 games are gimped compared to their PC counterparts maxed out.

SNES was more powerful than the Megadrive or the Turbografx-16, and yet it was not overly expensive hardware. Same with the N64 and the Gamecube; hardware as good or better than the competition, yet still able to be sold at affordable prices and at a profit.

I think i would love a 720p amoled capacitive screen with a tegra x1 chip. Higher resolutions aren't essential and also would allow a powerful chip like the x1 to run games almost on par with x1 and ps4, allowing easy ports. I think they also have to find a way to make android apks (a little like what blackberry an wp did) conversion in an easy way, so they would get quickly a lot of great games that work really bad without controllers like final Fantasy series or gta and max Payne.

You can call me Nostradamus

Based on the current specs there won't be easy ports from current gen. Ports from last gen should be easier though (like Zelda Wii U -> Zelda NX).

I don't think Nostradamus ever quoted himself.

m( _  _ )m    "we re not worthy! we re not worthy!"

Nostradamus called it.

Though I suspect when its not docked it ll run 540p.... 720p or higher will probably be reserved for when its docked, and showing games on the TV.

However a Tegra X1 wont run games almost on par with a PS4... its 1/3 of the power.

Its not going to get much 3rd party imo.. simply because the cpu & gpu arch are differnt from whats inside a ps4 or xb1, and its much less powerfull.

I would have to agree.

Sony's Playstation Vita proved once and for all that powerful hardware is essential in the fight against the growing smartphone market. Nintendo would be foolish not to follow their lead.

Thankyou!

Only partly right, but nice catch about the X1 thing, at least if turns out to be true.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.
