Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will PS4 be the first evolving console?

Isn't the New 3DS an improved version of the 3DS with improved processor speed that actually gives a visible bump to existing games?

True, you got me. The New 3DS is the first dedicated game platform to do this. Good call.

Glad to see someone understood what I was talking about, and was not confusing a revision with accessories.

I don't think that will happen. The reason why consoles have made it thus far is to give every user the same experience. But having an additional processing box for PlayStation VR make perfect sense...

That said, I do think the console life cycle will defiantly be shorter and maybe that's the only reason. Just expect shorter console generations...

This would still give every user the same experience. Day one PS4 owners would just end up having a PS4 and a PSVR box, and games in 900P/30fps or 1080p/30fps, and People with the second gen PS4 would have the PS4 with built in VR, and games that run at 1440p/30fps or 4K/30fps.

This keeps everyone in the same generation, while giving tech people an option for an improved experiece, and keeping the console fresh for late arrivers. It allows developers to continue to build to one OS/Hardware, and still have the massive userbase. It also keeps things simple for consumers, as all PS4 games run on PS4, and it can stay that way for a good 10 years or more.

If they start doing micro generations where we get new consoles every 4 or 5 years, then the industry will fold on itself. We are at a point where the improvment in tech over a 5 year period no longer presents enough of a boost to justify people buying  a new console. In, addition, games are taking 3 - 6 years in development. Everything about the industry is pointing to evoloving platforms that grow over time, and future generations needing to be further and further apart.

If we get a PS5 in 2018, and a PS6 in 2022, then you are going to end up confusing the market, and having generations where we never see a Gran Turismo, a Halo, a Zelda, or a GTA, because the time for development will just not be there. The days of the static platform don't look possible anymore. The OS's already began to evolve in gen 7, and with the switch to X86, standard GPU's, and standard RAM, there is no reason for the 8th gen consoles to sit on dated hardware for 6 - 8 years, when improvments can be made, and costs can continue to fall.

I hear what you are saying, I'm just worried that consoles like that would end up confusing even more people. But maybe the majority of PS4 gamers are hardcore gamers and would be up to date with what's going on in the gaming industry. Then it is a win, win.

If it doesn't hurt the console market and especially the PlayStation brand,  I'm all for it!

I have no problem with console generations being +/- 10 I for one haven't even gotten through my 7 gen game catalogue.

This is like Deja vu. Repeating the mistakes of the past with 3D and with console addon's.

I gotta point out how those all led to disastrous results. Even though the Mega CD and 32X innovated, they just weren't worth their price and then the competition comes out with a new and better system. Console customers don't want that. They want simplicity. If they wanted a platform they could upgrade the PC would be their system of choice.

Only on performance, not on graphics. It's a point where it becomes more acceptable since its a bit like a choice, but the new 3DS didnt catch on fire or anything. Its a douchy move to early adopters aswell, without whom your product would fail. The new 3DS has an exclusive title aswell.

Back in the 80's they already had "evolving" and expanding consoles with the Colecovision...

I have Expansion Module 1 that allowed me to play Atari VCS games on my Colecovision (Yes, I still have it).

Evolving consoles are nothing new. It just hasn't been one by Sony or Microsoft yet.

I predict that both Sony and Microsoft will release new consoles soon. But, unlike previous consoles they will offer full forward and backwards compatibility because they won't change the architecture of either machine, but instead increase their abilities to support 4K and better support higher framerates. You will still be able to play all the PS4 and X1 games on older PS4 and X1 consoles, but they will degraded in resolution and framerate.

No, and the architecture choice has nothing to do with it. new X86 come out that are more powerful then the previous ones, but the same is true for PowerPC, ARM, MIPS, etc... You can't push a chip beyond what's possible. You can of course optimize the software for the specific hardware, but that's as far as you can go really.

Just had to bump this thread to say, I told you so.

It is happening, and even sooner than I thought. Looking forward to 4K gaming, and solid 90 - 120fps titles on PSVR this holiday.

good luck with that, ps4 neo has a weaker version of amd rx 480 and that barelly can play games at 1440p 60fps with drops to 40s with a beast CPU/ram, a weaker version of that with a weak cpu in ps4 neo you should thank god if you get 1080p/60fps locked in SOME games

That is games in Ultra settings, with high AA. Consoles games are never optimized that way. Current PS4 and XBO games are optimized for 1080p/30fps, medium to high settings. Neo will have games at 4K/30fps and 1440p/60fps with medium to high settings and minimal AA. If people want 4k/60fps and Ultra Settings/Max AA, then that is why their are $500+ GPU's and PC's that cost multpile $1000's.

Not gonna happen.
Andrew House from Sony addressed this sort of thinking not that long ago during Sony's Investor's day.

"Sony: PlayStation Neo Isn’t a Shift to Regular Upgrades Like PC or Mobile"
