Cameron better have an unbelievable script for Avatar 2 IMO. That 3D gimmick is not going to carry a second movie.

Zoe Zaldana for one already stated she is impressed with the script and said it is highly emotional. And Cameron mentioned there ARE lots of things that are going to happen. I for one cannot wait!!!!

I dont think anyone involved in the movie would say anything other than the script is great. I dont see how Avaar 2 manages to make anywhere near the money the first one did, itll do great but regardless of its quality Im pretty sure itll sell less.

Time to $700 million:

TFA - 16 days.
Avatar - 72 days.

This Box office run is nuts, absolutely nuts.

Yeah, like what the heck! I'm sorry, but it just blows my mind as to why America loves Star Wars so much. Who the heck are all these people going to see this film??? I mean...really???

I'm literally holding my breath right now, just hoping....DO NOT beat Avatar and Titanic worldwide. TFA can have all those records it won, but not the MOST important one that matters. TOTAL gross!!! Titanic especially is a true, stunning work of art that does not deserve to be topped. Avatar only topped it because Titanic had no 3D when people were constantly going to watch it over and over again in theaters.

All it needs is EUROPE and ASIA to be the greatest box-office smash. China wasn't as big as it is now when Avatar released and made $200 million there. Avatar 2 will easily make $400 million considering I keep hearing it'll have NEW groundbreaking special effects and an insane frame rate. Avatar 2 is pretty much CONFIRMED for a $2 billion gross internationally based on the impact it had there. The US, I can totally see it doing under the $760 million the original grossed. If it's good $500 million tops, I'd say.

Anyway, I'll remember this thread the day Avatar 2 comes out and we'll see who is right. :p I have such crazy faith in it. And I know Cameron is going all out to make sure it's better than the first.

And I should find the link where Zoe Zaldana made that quote. I wouldn't mention it if I hadn't read it.

LOL @ Furious 7 in the Top 5 highest grossing films of all time. People in China must be REALLY hard up for entertainment.

Furious 7 did ok in China but most people don't that they actually had a domestic movie that did better in 2015.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_Hunt

Monster Hunt got a 30-day license extension.. Furious 7 made about $10m its last weekend before the government cut the license off. Not to say that Monster Hunt's run wasn't insane, because it was an incredible run.

But yeah... Can't make a valid comparison because the government screwed F7 (like all foreign movies) while benefitting F7.

Which makes me think TFA is gonna get killed in China, because the government will not want it to succeed.

They are moviegoers who, like most moviegoers, think that SW:TFA is a better movie than Titanic or Avatar.

I don't think most people understand this or that the current regime in China may have extra incentive to stifle the success of Star Wars.

Anyone know what Avatar made on its original release so we can do a more like to like comparison?

Here is the breakdown of how much it made in its inital release and rerelease.

Holy poo, I thought it may have done 1.6billion on first release and the rest on second release. Didn't realise it made 2.8billion almost on its first run.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, 90% of people disagree with you.

According to RT, 60% of people disagree with me when I say TPM is crap.

IMDB is a much better barometer for Star Wars movies (or anything in general, really):

Empire Strikes Back - 8.8

A New Hope - 8.7

The Force Awakens - 8.5

Return of the Jedi - 8.4

Revenge of the Sith - 7.7

Clone Wars - 6.9

The Phantom Menace - 6.5

2nd release only made about $35m so yeah.. That first run was insane. Titanic on the other hand - did a bit better on re-release, as at least 10% of its US run was from that re-release.

I am curious to see when they do a TFA re-release.. I could see a Director's Cut getting the movie over the $1b domestic mark.
