517 million globally according to the-numbers.com

Behind JW.

JW opened in more markets.  TFA isn't playing in China yet.

And JW wasn't opened in Japan yet.

To further proof my previous point just look at the numbers for JW it made $228 million in China and only $74 million in Japan.  Also unlike China, Japan doesn't have any restrictions on how many foreign movies can be shown in theaters each year and they don't have any restrictions on how long a particular movie can run.  Even with those restrictions China is already a much bigger and more important market then Japan.

There are movies that grossed more in Japan than JW in China.

It beat Jurassic World without even being in China with $528mil vs. JW's $525mil http://money.cnn.com/2015/12/20/media/star-wars-the-force-awakens-opening-weekend-box-office/

Fuck yeah!

Only one Western movie and that was Frozen and that was due to a favorable exchange rate even Titanic only managed $201 million in Japan and Avatar did even less it only did $171 million.  Plus I doubt there was ever a Japanese movie that grossed close to $400 million in Japan like Monster Hunt did in China.

I always felt like Phantom Menace could have beaten Titanic if it actually had been a good/decent movie.

Episode VII basically is that, it's the first Star Wars with really likeable main characters in 30 years. Box office will be huge.

Yokai watch had an awesome weekend in Japan I hear.^

The highest grossing movie of all time in Japan is still Spirited Away it made $229 million but Frozen actually earned more due to a more favorable exchange rate it made $249 million.

I'm pretty sure it will be huge in China also even though it will probably only run for a limited time there since there are still many restrictions on foreign films in China.

I am happy as well

Proud to be a Californian.

The only movies in Japan that have grossed more than JW in China are Japan's top 2-3 films of all time. And needless to say, there's films in China that have made much more than that. China's a much larger market, and will be bigger for Star Wars than Japan. Not sure why you're comparing them.
