Forums - Sony Discussion - Is The Last of Us a timeless classic?

Only time will tell...

I think it´s an amazing game, but I see it the same way I saw the success of the movie Avatar: Avatar was the highest grossing movie ever on box office, surpassing Titanic (thanks, of course, to the expensive 3D tickets - almost double the price), but it didn´t stand as memorable on the minds of people as Titanic, which is remembered by most people even today.
I see the Last of Us the same way, it´s a masterpiece for sure, and it had excellent sales, but I´m not sure if in the future people will remember it the same way as they will remember Call of Duty or Assassin´s Creed, or GTA, for example. I don´t see the same dedication of its fans in videogame conventions like we see from fans of CoD or AC or GTA (you know, cosplays, illustrations, merchandise and all that stuff)
But again, this is just a guess, time will tell and I hope people never forget this game, making it a timeless classic.

No. It's not ground breaking enough. It might have been the greatest within that genre at the time of launch but it borrowed from many games before it and didn't mark a sea change evolution.

Lets compare it to the shooters - half life 1 and 2. The first half-life marked a huge change in direction for fps away from quake and doom to the linear shooters which took over. The second dramatically raised the bar. Both haven't aged brilliantly as many later games repeated what they did until they became lost in the crowd. But Halflife 1s historic place is significant.

The last of us is more of a half-life 2 than a half-life 1. It's an evolution of what we had not a revolution and tlou is a more incremental evolution at that. Doesn't stop it being a truly great game but it isn't of great historic importance unlike all the games you listed.

Ask me again in 10 years.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

1st game in yrs that brought a tear to my eye. No spoilers but at the end of one of the seasons the controller dropped to my lap along with my jaw and a couple of manly tears. So yeah. For me. Timeless classic.

Nope! It's not even that great of a game. It had glaring pace issues in the story, it didnt even bother with a final boss battle. It was clearly incomplete and hastily stitched together. There was no climax to the game and it just ended. I didnt think it was anything special. There must be something "american" about it that i can't see, but it is clearly overhyped.

I feel you, bro. Now if you want another game that will punch your heart in the gut and you don't mind being a little girl or mostly watching a game play itself, try Life is Strange. Most powerful story I've ever experienced.

You cant call it a classic yet, only been out a few years hasnt it!!

When a new IP is acknowledged as the most awarded game in the history of gaming when releasing the same year that so many famous and proven franchises like BioShock, Tomb Raider, Assassin Creed, Devil May Cry, Super Mario World, Call of Duty, Metro, Batman:Arkham and Grand Theft Auto... Then you have to give that game credit.

2013 was a great year for gaming, But The Last of Us stole the year.

Regarding the actual question: Is The Last of Us a timeless classic? I will say that in my book, The Last of Us is a game that I will never forget and I recommend everyone to play it, even if you are not a gamer.

I can't even name one game, book or movie from the last 30 years that could be called timeless classic. Specially not a game, and none are even close. Games are just pop culture and meant to be pleasant. Surely many will hold TLOU dear, but not for reasons other than that(although many can't differentiate pop culture from classics), and not close to OoT's level.

Not to me that's for sure.

I don't know about the world, but it just doesn't have what it takes for me. The gameplay really was lacking. I get why it is what it is, but it just doesn't work for me. It has a couple of big problems which made me quit halfway through, let's leave it at that. Maybe I'll finish it one day, but I'll probably forget about it. The game only shines because of it's character development, but I don't think games will be remembered that way. It was a good game, but not amazing; for me, it's the least of Naughty Dog's games, though I can't speak for J&D because I never played one of those.
