Forums - Sony Discussion - Is The Last of Us a timeless classic?

I don't know. Story is good but I don't think I'll ever play it again. So much time was spent just walking and bonding with Ellie but will I have the patience for that again, knowing how it will end?

As for gameplay, it's good with fairly tense moments and decent AI but as always, it will be eclipsed by technological advances. The thing TLoU did better than most was present characters that seemed human in morally ambiguous situations. It's going to take time to see. Not just a couple of years.

i definitely think it should be. Imo it was the best game of the 7th gen.

On a different note, anybody that loved TLoU for its narrative and not gameplay, I recommend Life is Strange. The emotions, man!

I have a bias because it is my favorite game of all time; but you know what it's tough to say.
-It was critically acclaimed
-It sold a lot of copies
-It is receiving a movie adaptation
-It may spawn a sequel

I don't think the content was groundbreaking. Crafting, platforming, scavenging, shooting, stealth etc are common. Stories about zombies are common. The way it blended all the pieces together, and how it told the story; those are the reasons it has a chance to be a classic. It is for sure one of the best games of the 7th generation.

Mario Galaxy 1, 2, and Uncharted 2, 3 are the most likely games to become timeless classics. Also worth mentioning is that The Last of Us will probably be best remembered for it's story more than anything. Just a thought, though.

So I think maybe SotC levels of timelessness, but not on the levels of the other 3 games you mentioned.

I have to laught at this, altough only time will tell what is timeless or not The Last of Us is a game that blew ppls mind, after playing for like 2 hours I had felt like my inards had been ripped out of me and put back in place some 3 times already, it basicaly gave anyone the blueprint of how to make a very deep character driven storyline work on a videogame flawlessly. When anyone tries to diminish it with an argument about "well itll be remembered because of its story" I dont understand the point, like this is bad somehow ? You know why Mario Galaxy isnt remembered because of its story ? Because it has a ridiculous bad and shallow one. Does that make it a lesser game ? No cause it is very fun and has gorgeous settings and super well construted levels.  There are different ways to make a good game, the media is way past the days that the only way to make a game was have a character that jumps from one plataform to the next.

Yeah, I would agree that if only one game of 7th gen became a classic, TLOU is deserving of it.

As long as the times refuse to change, The Last of Us is going to make a hell of a racket. :D

There was absolutely no belittlement to The Last of Us in my post. The story part was just something I noted (and you did too). Stop making assumptions.

bet: lost

It's hard to say whether TLoU will be considered a timeless classic until some time passes. It could be remembered well for being an overall well crafted game, but it could be a game that gets covered over a large number of games and eventually be forgotten. It'll be interesting to see where it ends up.

Timeless games are games where the mechanics don't age poorly 20 years down the line. Will gameplay be to the point in 20 years where we look back and play a game like The Last of Us, and still have fun? I really don't know.
