Forums - Sony Discussion - Can PS4 holiday sales match PS2 holiday sales?

So 5.7m for holidays after Black Friday, and 8.4m for the entire quarter. With majority of the 2.7m remaining from November, I am guessing 1.5-2m. Using that estimate it matched 2003 and surpassed 2001 as predicted.

The 8.4 million number is a sell in number and cannot be used alongside a sell through number. The numbers in this thread are sell through numbers.

Here is an example, in the OP it is mentioned that the PS2 sold through 8.5 million in November and December 2002. However, Sony only sold in / produced 8 million units for October, November and December. The majority of units sold through to end users were actually shipped by Sony in the July to September quarter.

Therefore we can't use sell in numbers to accurately determine how many were sold through. For example, the sell through number as of end of 2015 is 35.9m, the shipment number is 37.7m, so this means there are 1.8m units in Channel.

The only number we have is 5.7m sold through between November 23rd and January 3rd. This is higher when compared to the same period in 2001. But there is no comparable period for 2002 as the full month of November is counted in that 2002 number. Therefore we can't exactly say whether PS2 did better than 2003 or 2002. But based on the data we do have it looks like it did less than 2003 and 2002 holiday.

Yes that is what I said in quick type. Majority of the 2.7m will still be from November. So it is 5.7+whatever is left.

Edit: to elaborate further, 8.4m shipped does not include what was left on shelves from the September quarter. October was seen as ridiculously slow in sales, The Pool for sales could in fact be higher then what was shipped. But of course we don't know that.

PS2 was around 199$ at this point in its life cycle right?

Sony needs a Slim model, thats 299$ for 2016.

So my question, and the point of this thread, is do you think that PlayStation 4 sell through during November and December will be able to match or even exceed any of the 3 holiday periods listed above for PlayStation 2?

*clears throat*

The answer is yes.

Highly doubt it. The ps2s competition wasn't really that big. The Gamecube was a flop and the xbox was new to the market. Compared to now Xbox is an established brand and Nintendo has the "NX" on the horizon so due to the stiffer competition i doubt it.

so did it?

Well it beat Holiday 2001 sales in the same time period.

However for 2002 and 2003 we can't be sure for certain as Sony released data for two different time periods. (In 2002 we have data for Nov 1st-Dec 31st and for 2015 we have Nov 23rd-Jan 3rd) So it's hard to say for sure.

But it looks like it was close to 2003 number, but did not get to peak 2002.
