Forums - Gaming Discussion - (Rumour) Rise of the Tomb Raider sells less than 200k in November (U.S.)

I just hope this doesn't affect it coming to the PS4 because I want to play it.

If anything it would push Square to make the game even better on PS4/PC because the title has tanked bigtime on X1 no matter how you slice it. Square weren't happy with the reboots performance figures and they were much higher than this(factoring in the 2 current platforms it is available on).

Monumental flop tbqf.

Both MS and SE lost in this partnership.

well, I think this is the last time we will see the XB1 get timed 3rd party exclusive anything, unless they literally fund the whole thing (like Titanfall) and in that case it would not be timed, just plain old exclusive.

So far this gen almost every dev that has bet on XB1 has lost (TRR is the worst of all). I am sure there has been a couple positive cases (I guess Titanfall would be one because it would not have existed without going with MS)

Dragon Age: Inquistion- EA gave marketing rights and times exclusive DLC to XB1. To date has sold 1.68 mil on PS4 and .75 on XB1. Surely EA would have gotten more return had they focused it the userbase that wanted to play it.
Witcher 3- Sold 2.67 on PS4, .86 on XB1. But XB1 had marketing rights.
Sunset OD- Isomaniac went with XB1. has sold .89 mil to date, and that was with bundling.
AC Unity- Oh boy. Impossible to judge sales at all seeing as it was probably the probably most bundled game in Xbox history (save Kinect Adventures). But the whole way AC Unity was handled from the marketing/bundles on the console that has never played it as much (even when the X360 was killing PS3 AC still sold better on PS3), botched launch, bugs, etc. It seems to have sent that series on a rapid decline. Which is funny because Black Flag was a major comeback for the series after kinda declining each year after AC2.

I know someone is ready to respond with "But the PS4 has a larger userbase thus the sales differences". no kidding. The 2 main things a Publisher should look at when giving exclusive marketing rights 1. User base 2. Audience. After that they can look and see how much they are willing to pay. If the Publishers analysis says going with X platform will reduce total sales by 200k, then if they are willing to cover that well why not. Guaranteed money I guess.

For example I saw some people are noting that BO3 is selling slightly better on XB1 in US, even with the PS4 having marketing. Ok. But which console is it selling more on. Look at WW totals. Which is all that really matters.

Activision seems to have figured this out. EA might be coming around (Madden on XBox makes sense as that game is almost completely US centric), but any company that goes with XBox as lead on anything at this point either was paid a shit ton of money by MS or they are stupid (which I believe Square falls into on TRR).

Please note I am only talking about marketing rights and some timed/exclusive content. Software sells well enough on the XB1 to warrant a port in just about every case (JRPGs being the only obvious exception).

psn- tokila

add me, the more the merrier.

Some people are making this out to be more than it is. I think that the tomb raider IP will be just fine. It's a big IP and it would take multiple shit releases to truly harm the IP. As for the game itself, I'm sure it's good and it will make up for sales once it releases on the other platforms. MS botched the launch with poor marketing and choosing a moronic release window. That's why the sales are low. I can't blame SE or MS for making this deal but it's fair to point out how badly the game was handled.

Maybe, just maybe... They should have been a little bit more worried about Fallout 4. :P

Well it's pretty much more indication that the Tomb Raider timed exclusivity deal was one of the worst ideas ever. It didn't help Microsoft, it didn't help Square... It pissed allot of their fanbase off which coincidentally many if not the most are on a different system so they didn't even release it to where most their fans were. This may effect the budget of the next game and significantly alter the franchises future, but hey... They said they were not worried!

The perfect storm of stupid is complete.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head.  A Tomb Raider game not coming to Playstation is laughable!  (I mean it is, but you know what I mean).

Don't worry, it will launch 1 year from now on PS4 with DLC on disc and sell 3x more on Playstation - and SE will never be this dumb again.

I basically agree with this. It would be almost as bad as making a Metal Gear game timed-exclusive to Xbox(or Nintendo console). The main audience for those games are on Playstation. MGSV sold something like 8 times as much on PS4 as compared to X1(according to VGC I know, but still sold several times more on Sony) because that title was made popular on Sony platforms. This is also the reason why Black Ops 3 has sold really well on Xbox 1 even with the PS4 having twice the user base AND marketing exclusivity, as COD was heavily tied into Xbox last gen.

This is not true. In US both XB1 and PS4 close to each other in LTD which is why XB1 getting more sales from BO3 as they had marketing for first year and have friends in XB1, but in worldwide BO3 sold more than XB1 almost 2:1

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

Really? That's a shame, it looks like it's a great game. Well, I think that's a lesson for SE. A large part of the TR fandom are in Sony consoles, so this temporal exclusive seems odd to me.

1. MS haven't managed to move any consoles, so I think this wasn't a great deal for them.
2. SE managed to pissed off TR fans who play on PS4 or PC..

I think it's a lose-lose situation.

Worldwide, I acknowledge that Black Ops 3 is selling much more on PS4, however I don't think it is in-line with the userbase(PS4 has essentially double) and factoring in the exclusive marketing and early DLC. This is just for the US mind you, where COD is huge. Elsewhere I wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 version outsells the X1 version by 3 at the least.

Why is it so laughable that it launches first on another system?

I didn't even own a PS1, but when I think of that era - I always see Tomb Raider as synonomous with Playstation (And I know many others do too).

Furthermore:

-Even Last gen Tomb Raider sold ~40% more copies on PS3 than 360.

-The Definitive Edition sold over twice as many copies on PS4 as it did on X1.

And then they do this?!    No this is insane money hatting done to guard against Uncharted, and it cost SE a lot of money...

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

[Prediction Made 6/18/2014]

It didn't cost them a lot. That was all paid for by MS. It cost MS a lot they should've used on their own IP though...

I'm just gonna leave this here:
